I order another bourbon, neat. This is the drink that will flip the switch. I don’t even know how I got here, to this place, to this point. Something is happening to me lately. I’m drinking too much. My sheets are soaking wet when I wake up from nightmares of decaying corpses. I order another drink and swig it, trying to forget about the latest case I can’t shake. Crime solving for me is more complex than the challenge of the hunt, or the process of piecing together a scientific puzzle. The thought of good people suffering drives me to the point of obsession.

For years, behind the closed doors of their farmhouse in Raymond, Washington, their sadistic mother, Shelly, subjected her girls to unimaginable abuse, degradation, torture, and psychic terrors. Through it all, Nikki, Sami, and Tori developed a defiant bond that made them far less vulnerable than Shelly imagined.

Description
The Golden State Killer. The East Area Rapist. The Original Night Stalker. The Visalia Ransacker.
The monster who preyed on Californians from 1975 to 1986 was known by many aliases. And while numerous police sketches tried to capture his often-masked visage, the Golden State Killer spent more than 40 years not only faceless, but nameless.
For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. To be sure, the chances of obtaining closure – or any form of justice – after so many years were slim to none, at best.
Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name.
Delivering all-new details about the investigation and a stunning final act to the events of Michelle McNamara's haunting best seller, I'll Be Gone in the Dark, this is the true story of how the suspected Golden State Killer was captured, as told, first-hand, by those closest to the case:
Paul Holes — the forensic criminologist and retired Costa County detective who spent 20 years trying to crack the Golden State Killer case, and finally did.
Steven Kramer — the FBI lawyer who pioneered the use of a public DNA database to unmask a killer, creating controversy in the process.
Jim Clemente (Host) — a retired FBI profiler and former New York City prosecutor who has investigated some of the highest profile criminal cases in U.S. history, including The Unabomber.

Love this series
Super shocking and informative. Love all the information on not just the serial killer but what investigation was like back then and how poor it was.

Good documentary
Very interesting story and many different people are interviewed. The documentary does fall off at the end as there is very little information known about the actual person that completed these attacks.

Every word is incredible
Incredible story about a true hero Paul Holes and his out of the box idea to use DNA in a groundbreaking new way. Must read for anyone who is interested in justice. Thank you Paul for this great book and thank you for your service. Your a true hero.
To the victims and those who spoke during this book, your words encompassed the reason why this case had to be closed. Bless your lives moving forward.

A great supplement to Michelle McNamara's book
I read I'll be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara last summer and a few months later, I realized that the GSK or EAR had been caught! This podcast is the perfect supplement to the other book because Joseph DeAngelo wasn't caught yet, so this finishes off the saga. Though I'm interested to know what happens in the trial and I hope that Audible will add more recordings during/after the trial to wrap this up.
The podcast interviews the police, investigators and victims which paints a real picture of the horror of the crimes that DeAngelo is accused of committing. That it took more than 3 decades to prove DNA evidence. How genealogy was used to finally get him another 10 years later. The tragedy and frustration of rape kits being destroyed because of statute of limitations on unsolved rapes which led to the loss of valuable evidence.
It brought tears to my eyes listening to all the roadblocks that investigators and how long victims waited for justice thanks to legal bureaucracy or the fact that technology wasn't far enough yet to make the link.
If you are a fan of true crime, this production is a no-brainer to download!
