Description

A Warhammer Horror portmanteau.

Drawn together by mysterious circumstances, three strangers meet in the mists of a desolate cemetery world. As they relate their stories, the threads of fate are drawn around them, and destiny awaits....

Read it because: It's a classic horror portmanteau comprising three Warhammer 40,000 novellas, each with its own distinct feel - a ghost story, a monster saga and a psychological horror tale - that all draw together through the terrifying linking story.

The story: On a misty cemetery world, three strangers are drawn together through mysterious circumstances. Each of them has a tale to tell of a narrow escape from death. Amid the toll of funerary bells and the creep and click of mortuary-servitors, the truth is confessed. But whose story can be trusted? Whose recollection is warped, even unto themselves?

For these are strange stories of the uncanny, the irrational and the spine-chillingly frightening, where horrors abound and the dark depths of the human psyche is unearthed.

GW's foray into horror?

The meeting of strangers was a great concept to start most horror tropes. In this foray by gamesworkshop three such strangers meet on an eerie world, each with their own story to tell. An imperial guard commisar, a commander, and a priest meet and try to decide what twist of fate had brought them together... before it's too late.

The one thing, if anything that got me hooked on this was the concept of horror. warhammer 40k is rife with tales that can be horrific of told in a horror slant. this the conglomeration of authors have pulled off really well.

the second piece of this audio drama is just that. the drama. the voice acting is unlike anything I've ever heard. well acted. well voiced. for hours the tales spun held me as I drove on in my roadtrip.

lastly was story. the stories seemed like normal warhammer fare yet gone are the grandiose theatres of war, space marines, and foul xenos. replacing them are horror elements slotted into 40k skin. a bit clumsily at times the authors did well enough to keep my interest as I drove. but there seems to be a bit more room needed to flesh out the story(s). maybe an epilogue? final words that would wrap up the trinity of terrible tales?

I would recommend this to any warhammer 40k fan if you are looking for a different take on our favorite universe.

Dark Trio of Tales

I am not a Warhammer 40K fan. I was led to this book searching in the Horror genre on Audible. There is little in this book that would qualify as frightening (or even very creepy).."Horror" is subjective. The three short stories within definitely would qualify as "dark", however, and the gore is striking. This book has three strangers show up on a mysterious mortuary world (the planet Silence)..each bewildered character has a strange story on how they wound up there. It's a tried and true vehicle to bring together three short stories and it works here, too. The Warhammer universe provides an interesting backdrop, but isn't integral to the episodes. The first story is a very good paranormal possession mystery, the second has startling imagery and a veangeful ghost, and the third is a fairly decent 'found derelict spacecraft' tale with a horrific monster. The ending is too abrupt, unfortunately - an epilogue would have been more satisfying. Still, pretty good.

The performances from Doug Bradley, Richard Reed, Emma Gregory, and John Banks are professional and enjoyable. Doug Bradley is particularly impressive - great accents.

This compilation is worth 8 stars out of 10. though it might be disappointing for a Warhammer fan looking for battle descriptions.

Warhammer40k is a perfect setting for horror.

I loved this title very much and will listen to it again very soon. If you enjoy gore and body horror this title is perfect for you. The descriptions of terror, suspense and gore are spectacular. All five senses are described near perfectly to create a truly terrifying experience. The store structure is well paced with explosive climaxes. The narration is top notch as well. Even if you are not a Warhammer fan this title is a great contender for one of my favorite horror stories.
