Story
On the edge of the Northern Atlantic lies a remote island. The islanders are an outwardly harmonious community—but all have their own secrets, some much darker than others. And when a strange disorder begins to infect them all, those secrets come to light. Ferry service fails and contact with the mainland is lost. Rumors begin to swirl as a temporary inconvenience grows into nightmarish ordeal. The fabric of the once tight-knit island is unnervingly torn apart—and whatever the cause, the question soon stops being how or why it happened, but who, if anyone, will survive.

Story
Hig survived the flu that killed everyone he knows. His wife is gone, his friends are dead, he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, his only neighbor a gun-toting misanthrope. In his 1956 Cessna, Hig flies the perimeter of the airfield or sneaks off to the mountains to fish and to pretend that things are the way they used to be. But when a random transmission somehow beams through his radio, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life exists beyond the airport.

Story
The cabin had always been a special retreat for Isherwood Williams, a haven from the demands of society. But one day while hiking, Ish was bitten by a rattlesnake, and the solitude he had so desired took on dire new significance. Ish headed home when he finally felt himself again—and noticed the strangeness almost immediately. No cars passed him on the road; the gas station not far from his cabin looked abandoned; and he was shocked to see the body of a man on the roadside near a small town. Without a radio or phone, Ish had no idea of humanity’s abrupt demise.

Surprised this is not more popular. A great post apocalypse novel, ahead of its time.

Publisher's Summary
A "suspenseful, atmospheric tale...punctured by a gut-punch twist" (Entertainment Weekly), A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World is a story of survival, courage, and hope amid the ruins of our world.
My name's Griz. I've never been to school, I've never had friends, and in my whole life I've not met enough people to play a game of football. My parents told me how crowded the world used to be, before all the people went away. But we were never lonely on our remote island. We had each other and our dogs.
Then the thief came.
"This unputdownable story has everything - a well-imagined post-apocalyptic world, great characters, incredible suspense, and, of course, the fierce love of some very good dogs." (Kirkus, starred review)
What the critics say
"Fletcher's suspenseful, atmospheric tale imagines a near future in which our world is in ruins.... An adventure saga punctured by a gut-punch twist." (Entertainment Weekly)
"[A] heart-and gut-wrenching tale of a post-apocalyptic world.... A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World takes a memorable journey of loyalty and love and transforms it into an unraveling mystery of self-discovery and exploration.... This is the story of trust and loyalty within a family, and finding your own pack - even if they're different from the pack you were born into." (Bookpage)
"The hunt for Jess propels this story forward like a rocket, and Fletcher does a masterful job keeping the stakes high and the suspense crackling while still creating plenty of space for readers to get to know Griz and explore this fascinating not-quite-empty world. This unputdownable story has everything-a well-imagined post-apocalyptic world, great characters, incredible suspense, and, of course, the fierce love of some very good dogs." Perfect in Every Way...
This is the sort of novel we all hope as readers to find under every cover and never forget when we do. It truly is a wonderful story with characters that remind you what it is to be alive. Grateful to have found it. Only sad thing is I don’t expect to read a better novel this year.

Compelling from start to finish
A thoughtful and provocative story that I am sorry to have finished. Such an imaginative way of looking back on what we once were from the unique perspective of a child.

Great addition to the post-apocalypse/dystopian genre
Great story-well written. I have to say that the narrator (who I just discovered was the author) put me off at first. Not sure why - but after 10 minutes I found the narration adding to my enjoyment of this book rather than detracting from it. The author paints a very plausible and believable picture of a thinly populated pst-apocalyptic world-and sets a great story with interesting characters in it. Certainly one of my top 10 audiobooks.

Joins the best in dystopian lit
This is a thoughtful and beautifully written novel. It gently probes a possible future, painting humanity in all our truths - ugly and not. I love that it is narrated by the author. Makes a first person story authentic, natural sounding, and true to the author’s interior vision and (of course) voice.

People who love dogs, are good to be with
My brother’s dog Hoss was killed by wolves yesterday and after I learned the sad news, I finished this audio book while spending precious time with Merlin, my old Bernese Kitchen Dog and appreciating him to the fullest.
