Description

International bestselling author Patricia Cornwell delivers pulse-pounding thrills in a series featuring a brilliant and unusual new heroine, cutting-edge cybertechnology, and stakes that are astronomically high.

On the eve of a top secret space mission, Captain Calli Chase detects a tripped alarm in the tunnels deep below a NASA research center. A NASA pilot, quantum physicist, and cybercrime investigator, Calli knows that a looming blizzard and government shutdown could provide the perfect cover for sabotage, with deadly consequences.

As it turns out, the danger is worse than she thought. A spatter of dried blood, a missing security badge, a suspicious suicide - a series of disturbing clues point to Calli’s twin sister, Carme, who’s been MIA for days.

Desperate to halt the countdown to disaster and to clear her sister’s name, Captain Chase digs deep into her vast cyber security knowledge and her painful past, probing for answers to her twin’s erratic conduct. As time is running out, she realizes that failure means catastrophe - not just for the space program but for the safety of the whole nation.

What has happened to Patricia Cornwell?

I loved her Scarpetta series...until it went of the rails with an increasingly paranoid, neurotic cast of characters. I had high hopes for this book, a new series, a new character, maybe a change in the writing style.

Boy was I disappointed. Same old crazy, neurotic main character, bizarrely angry and aggressive best friend, rambling, wordy, no real action to speak of AND NO ENDING!!!! What kind of author writes a book that doesn't tie up a single loose end by the last page. I can see leaving a couple of things hanging to keep running with the series, but there's NOTHING.

I don't know what happened to Patricia Cornwell to change her writing style so dramatically and drastically that there is literally nothing redeeming about, but this was the last chance. I won't look at another one of her books. And the narration gives me pause to get another book narrated by January LaVoy. Overly dramatic way, way beyond realistic, ugh.

Disappointed

I was enjoying the story line and then it felt like the book just ended abruptly. Definitely different from her other novels.

irritatingly slow

Irritating, almost OCD level of irrelevent detail. worst i have read in a long time. plot is slow to build, then ends suddenly without adequate explanation or closure.
Huge plot errors and garbage science.

Quantum

I believe the download was defective because the first half of the book repeated on the second half of the book. Therefore, I have no real grasp of the story or where it goes. Usually I enjoy her stories.

Confused and unresolved

I normally love this author, but this book reads more like a rough draft, or the first half of a book. Much of the NASA talk seems implausible, and the protagonist is riddled with self-doubt. It makes me miss confident, sensible, and sometimes crusty Scarpetta. I’m hoping she either returns or Capt Chase gets some resilience lessons from her.

Pointless, Boring, and Unsympathetic Characters

This book's biggest flaw is that there was no ending. We have a possible intruder on a military base and later a murder. Neither one of which are solved in the course of the story. I see that this is book one of the series, but each book should be encapsulated meaning it is a complete story in it's own right.

The story seems to take place mainly in the protagonists head. There's a lot of whining and emotional crap going on showing the main character to be very distracted from her job. There's too much family drama for this to be considered a thriller. There were no chase scenes there wasn't much of an investigation into a suspicious death and ultimately nothing happened all the questions remain on answered.

Second there seem to be a lot of pointless exposition and detailed description that did nothing to further the plot. There were flashbacks that seemed unnecessary and it was hard to tell when the story was taking place in the present and when it was taking place in the past. I assume in written form the text is italicized or in someway indicates that the scene is a flashback.

Her early works were so good & I vaguely remember a satirical series that was pithy.

This was just bad.

Outstanding start to a serialized series!

QUANTUM is the first novel in this serialized series which is to say that it ends in a cliffhanger (without resolution). I was aware of the cliffhanger before I purchased the novel because I had read some of the earlier negative Amazon reviews. QUANTUM has received horrid reviews which it does not deserve. Classifying the genre is difficult based on QUANTUM. Audible classify it as espionage thriller which seems valid. The novel is very technical and it deals with technical detail. The protagonist is Captain Calli Chase who works with NASA on the space program as a pilot, quantum physicist, and cybercrime investigator and who hopes to become an astronaut. Her parents also work at NASA as does Calli's identical twin sister who is named Carme (pronounced as karma). The Captain Chase series has real potential.

I'm a long time fan of author Patricia Cromwell going back 40 years to when she was an award winning reporter with our local newspaper the Charlotte Observer (actually it is no longer a real newspaper as it is now only fit to collect droppings in a parakeet cage). Early in her career as an author (beginning around 1990) Cromwell wrote many outstanding medical thrillers in her medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta series. More recently her books in the Scarpetta series and others of her books have had a major decline in quality. My hope is that the Captain Chase series will be a revival of her fortunes as a novelist. I'm happy to see that she is for the first time using self publishing with the Amazon company platform (Thomas & Mercer and Brilliance Audio) rather than a traditional publisher.

January LaVoy does a wonderful job of narrating this novel.

Not worth the time or money

I read three other books before finishing this. At times the details were so long I forgot what was going on. I kept wishing it would get better. Save yourself and don’t buy this book. Keep looking.

Do not buy this book

I usually love Patricia Cornwell books, but this book was horrible. No real story just almost random thoughts. Skips all around. No development of characters and no development of the plot. Even ended without an ending. Listening to this book was pure torture. Don’t waste your money.

Oh my God!!!!

I kept waiting for something to happen......
and waiting. This was a terrible read. Took me over a week to get through it and I am currently in a full cast on my right leg and loads of time to enjoy books.
I’ve listened to January LaVoy before and she has always turned in a terrific performance. Even she couldn’t save this book. She sounded furtive and frantic by turns. If you are looking for a Kay Scarpetta type read, stop now.

Tihis is a joke, right? Quantum, my patootie !

I couldn't finish this dog. There is no dialogue, no continuity, no characters, no plot, I was six chapters in when it dawned on me that all I'd heard was she was in a tunnel. How do people get away with this crap?

Do not waste your credits on this book.

Very weak story hidden in Techno Scientific speak that didn't add anything to the story. I loved Cornwell's Scarpetta series, but this book was terrible. The drama was forced. I couldn't get into it it and didn't really care what happened.

Ramblings of a very neurotic woman

I am very disappointed with this book, Seems like Cornwell is writing her own strange musings. I listened for 6 hours thinking it would get interesting. I have always enjoyed Cornwell's coroner stories. This book is not typical of Cornwell's novels. In 6 hours it is essentially the ramblings of very neurotic woman. If you are expecting Cornwell's usual fast moving mystery/thrillers this book will not meet your expectations. I returned it after 6 hours.

Cornwall has lost it

I’ve loved Cornwall for years but this disaster was ridiculous. A story you can’t follow filled with flashbacks that make zero sense and technical descriptions people from NASA couldn’t follow. Fly past this one. Waste of time and money. An ending so abrupt it gave me whiplash.
