Description

A dark, compelling new thriller from best-selling authors Sarah A. Denzil and Anni Taylor

Young backpackers Gemma and Hayley arrive at a remote fruit farm in Australia’s Northern Territory, out of money and desperate for work.

The weeks go on, a blur of fruit picking, parties, campfires and wading beneath waterfalls in the nearby hot springs. Until the night the girls find themselves on a dark highway, bruised and bloodied.

Senior Detective Bronwen McKay and psychologist Megan Arlotti question the terrified girls. But Hayley and Gemma are telling two very different stories of what happened to them over the past three months.

Which story is the truth, and what are the girls covering up? A suspenseful thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end.

Utterly Ridiculous

So far fetched and unrealistic that I was annoyed I listened to the whole thing. The narrator was good though.

Another winner from this author

My first ever audiobook was Sarah Denzil’s “Silent Child” and I’ve loved her writing ever since. This was no exception. I really hope it’s made into a movie someday. Her books keep me captivated from beginning to end.

It's ok

Narration was very good, story was mediocre at best. Struggled to keep my attention. Not one of those stories that kept me intrigued.

Winding Road

Uh, hello Netflix? yes, I have your next series right here!!! thrilling! Just when you think it's about to be over, there's another twist!

Cultish, murderous, suspenseful, and a bit on the sci-fi. Love it!

Kept Me Engaged With Unique Plot

A variety of interesting characters, moments that made my heart race throughout, and a mystery to put together. I definitely kept listening past my bed time too often!

I really enjoyed the story but you do have to hold for disbelief for one element for it to work. With that in mind, it was tricky for me to know if it was justified how the characters would act but if one goes along with the plot details then it is a unique premise indeed!

Wow!

Writing was excellent. Story was going strong right off the bat then introduced new characters from a new perspective. Of course that's necessary bringing in the police procedural part of it.
Trust me though it's a fascinating story and after a long dry spell with nothing exciting this was a great. Highly recommended.

I’m actually upset at the five star reviewers....

I was excited to listen to this book and definitely the first few chapters are attention grabbing. But after a few hours of ridiculously boring chapters, I had to return. This book is not good. Not even a little. Audible returns are made for this book. The narrator was good. The book is not.

Wow.

This was so creepy it had me looking over my shoulder a few times. It's been a while since I've come across a true psychological thriller. You definitely won't be disappointed!

Exceptional psychological thriller

I've listened to a lot of mystery/thrillers over the last few months and most are lacking in originality or in actual thrills -- or the mystery is too easily figured out or too out of left field. But this book was solid all the way through, good story, surprises along the way, and fully fleshed out characters. I highly recommend.

Twists A-Plenty

I don’t often do more than just give a “stars” - leaving the full reviews to other folks. That said, when an author really captures my attention and interest like Sarah and Anni did, I need let others know!

This book twists and turns, and just when I thought I’d figured it out - another twist. Right up to the last sentence this was an excellent and well written book! It was quite a ride!!

Bravo!!

Interesting and captivating

I was worried at first this was going to be one of those books where nothing happens in the present, and the whole story is just flashbacks and re-telling of the past. That is definitely not the case! The story picks up quickly and has many unpredictable twists throughout. Would highly recommend!

Spoiler alert!!

Grrrr!!! Why why why did you have to end the book that way!! Damnit!! And why did u have to kill off one of the most important people. Kill Tate or Sophie but not HER!!! Other than that tho the book is excellently written. This is the best psychological thriller of all because I almost had to stop listening because I was so upset at what was happening to the people!! Excellently narrated as well. The accents were like butter!!! And soothing to hear!!

My pretty orchids...we are family

Backpackers from around the world were recruited to work the mango farm during mango picking season. At Llewellyn Farm everyone is family. Most are run aways from broken homes looking for a new adventure.

When two frightened but brave girls end up on a highway away from the farm, two detectives and a psychologist are called to ask the girls a few questions. Megan was just a psychologist who’d stepped way past her professional boundary lines to find the answers the girls couldn’t retain. Megan worked closely with the detectives assisting them with any information she could retain from the girls.
When questioned separately each girl recounts a different set of circumstances leading up to their escape. Both girls were at the centre of it all. Thankfully both girls survived the accident on the highway.

Narrator:
Aimee Horne was amazing. I haven’t enjoyed a performance this much since I listened to Will Watt and Hayden Bishop. Superb performance. I especially liked the British performance. Aimee reminded me how wonderful this story was when I read it myself. This was a revisit of the story and I thought it deserved a revisit with an audio experience. Aimee didn’t disappoint. She enhanced my reading experience 10 fold. I always follow along to the narration to ensure I’m retaining every word and this one didn’t disappoint.

This was a flawless performance. Each word was voiced just as it was written. The sound quality was sound proof with no outside disturbances.

Overall:
I loved the layout. Sarah immediately took the focus off of who chased them down the highway by focusing on the why. Let me just say I was unprepared for the why. Sarah has quite a scary imagination. The twists and turns were nothing I’d imagined. Sarah pulled off a clever story. It was brilliant.

I liked both detectives collaborating with the psychologist sharing ideas and concepts to proceed in the case. I liked all the supporting cast of characters they enhanced the story and brought this story to life.

Seems slow at first...just Wait For It!

I bought this book because of the great reviews and I was interested in the fact that the girls told different stories. When I started listening, I was disappointed because I felt like I had already read/listened to so many similar stories. Serial killer, keeping girls captive, they eventually escape... I don’t mean to sound cold, it just seemed like an old story. I wouldn’t want to spoil it, just believe that the first part hasn’t even scratched the surface. It gets really good!
