Story
Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by - palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing - are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive. But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs.

Cat's Cradle is Vonnegut's satirical commentary on modern man and his madness. An apocalyptic tale of this planet's ultimate fate, it features a little person as the protagonist; a complete, original theology created by a calypso singer; and a vision of the future that is at once blackly fatalistic and hilariously funny.

A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

Publisher's Summary
The New York Times best-selling first book in Joe Abercrombie's The Age of Madness Trilogy where the age of the machine dawns, but the age of magic refuses to die.
The chimneys of industry rise over Adua, and the world seethes with new opportunities. But old scores run deep as ever.
On the blood-soaked borders of Angland, Leo dan Brock struggles to win fame on the battlefield, and defeat the marauding armies of Stour Nightfall. He hopes for help from the crown. But King Jezal's son, the feckless Prince Orso, is a man who specializes in disappointments.
Savine dan Glokta - socialite, investor, and daughter of the most feared man in the Union - plans to claw her way to the top of the slag-heap of society by any means necessary. But the slums boil over with a rage that all the money in the world cannot control.
The age of the machine dawns, but the age of magic refuses to die. With the help of the mad hillwoman Isern-i-Phail, Rikke struggles to control the blessing, or the curse, of the Long Eye. Glimpsing the future is one thing, but with the guiding hand of the First of the Magi still pulling the strings, changing it will be quite another....

What the critics say
"Rife with emotion with wit to spare, both honed to an effortlessly fine edge. A Little Hatred is the joy of watching a master of the craft with his tools at their sharpest." (Sam Sykes, author of Seven Blades in Black)
"Abercrombie's work is dark and gritty and filled with black humor and grim observations about human nature." (Forbes)
"A Little Hatred is Abercrombie at his very best: witty, wise, and whip-smart. Masterfully plotted.... I had high hopes for this book, and it exceed them all." (Nicholas Eames, author of Kings of the Wyld)

Can't wait to start the next in the series...
Feeling lost and abandoned by GRRM, I got into these books after reading ASOIAF. Turns out I just needed to broaden my horizons and discover the mind of Joe Abercrombie. Picked up at 'The Blade Itself', and I haven't put it down since. Also the narrator gives a genius performance in every book.

Outstanding Reader!
This is the first Audible book that I thought I might abandon halfway through. I had a hard time getting through the first third of this book. It’s probably that I haven’t read this style of book in many years. There are so many names and characters and I had no idea who was who and which groups contained which characters. I recently read Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky and I was able to keep all of those characters straight. And the characters in that story had their proper names and Official names and nicknames and was difficult to remember everyone. With Crime and Punishment I had the Audible version and the Kindle version so that I could listen to a couple of chapters then read them on Kindle. It helped me to see the written names. How they were spelled and so on. Anyway, I needed that help to aid my comprehension and enjoyment. So in this book it took me a long while to understand and appreciate the great amount of set-up required to put a trilogy together. But at the end of the book I would definitely say it was worth it. The performance by Steven spacey is outstanding! I completely forgot about the person doing the reading, he just filled every character with life and made them all individual and believable. I’m very excited to start the next part of the story and I’m glad that I invested the time to set the foundation.

Spectacular, and riveting. Part of why I enjoy Joe’s writing so much is the realism in reactions. Even in a world of fantasy and grit, the people are as ever real as we are in how they react.

Wonderful
Great characters, great story, great writing and great narration.
I have stumbled upon a few of Abercrombie's books in the past, but never actually picked any up. I've never really been a fan of the multiple point of view trope, but this was absolutely masterfully done. I now regret not picking his books up earlier.

Wow,

and I did like how it presents the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the world
But you should read the First Law Series first to get more out of this one
