Description

In The Life & Times of Beethoven, celebrated composer and music historian Professor Robert Greenberg of San Francisco Performances gives you a unique perspective on a musical genius the likes of which the world had never seen before - or since.

Blending biography, history, and music appreciation, these 10 lectures portray Beethoven’s extraordinary (and still modern-sounding) music as a direct outgrowth of his life, environment, and interior emotional landscape. What makes Beethoven’s anger so special is that he was the first composer to portray his own raw (sometimes even violent) emotions directly in his music. As a result, for more than 200 years, works like his later quartets, his Hammerklavier sonata, and his Symphony No. 9, have moved, touched, and sometimes even frightened listeners in a manner almost primal.

Professor Greenberg lays bare the links between Beethoven’s life and his incredible output of music. Listeners will learn:

  • How the crisis involving Beethoven’s hearing became a catalyst for his musical creativity and originality,
  • How Beethoven’s infatuation with Napoleon helped him change the language of Western music,
  • How Beethoven’s “Heroic Music” helped the composer symbolically overcome his pain and unhappiness,
  • How six factors contributed to Beethoven’s crushing fall from popular grace in 1815,
  • How Beethoven revolutionized the genre of string quartets during the last two years of his compositional life, and much more!

These lectures give an unforgettable perspective of an angry, alienated composer, who, nevertheless, translated personal defeats into musical triumphs.

Another excellent book by Dr. Greenberg

I love Beethoven and am always happy to hear more about his life in order to understand his music even better. I have listened to all of Dr. Greenberg’s books on Beethoven (among other composers) and his music. What those books, with the musical excerpts, did was provide some illustration of a certain point Dr. Greenberg was making. I go back and re-listen to them quite often, particularly when preparing to attend a performance of one of his works. Because they included music, of necessity some biographical details of his life had to be omitted. This book providing only biographical material, could go into more detail and I thoroughly enjoyed that. I did not hear his references to musical examples as trying to “sell” more books; I saw them simply as information for those who were disappointed in the lack of music and wanted to hear the actual music.

I have to say I’ve listened to all the Great Courses that Dr. Greenberg authored. It has deepened my understanding of the biographical, social, and political context in which the music was written and I hear it with an added dimension which increases my enjoyment of it immensely. Because of Dr. Greenberg’s course on listening to and understanding opera, I’ve become and opera fan as well, a genre I resisted most of my life! So hats off to you, Dr. Greenberg, and please keep writing these books!!!

Amazing Angry Man

While I have Dr. Bob’s other series of Beethoven lectures, this book is a great introduction for anyone interested in Beethoven’s history. Perfect narration too, I can listen to Dr Bob all the time
