Description

#1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner unites three of her most beloved characters - Detective D. D. Warren, Flora Dane, and Kimberly Quincy - in a twisty new thriller, as they investigate a mysterious murder from the past...that points to a dangerous and chilling present-day crime.

FBI Special Agent Kimberly Quincy and Sergeant Detective D. D. Warren have built a task force to follow the digital bread crumbs left behind by deceased serial kidnapper Jacob Ness. When a disturbing piece of evidence is discovered in the hills of Georgia, they bring Flora Dane and true-crime savant Keith Edgar to a small town where something seems to be deeply wrong. What at first looks like a Gothic eeriness soon hardens into something much more sinister...and they discover that for all the evil Jacob committed while alive, his worst secret is still to be revealed. Quincy and D. D. must summon their considerable skills and experience to crack the most disturbing case of their careers - and Flora must face her own past directly in the hope of saving others.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"Narrator Kirsten Potter rises to the challenge of bringing this diverse cast to life. Her characterizations are strong, highlighting the toughness of the lead investigators and contrasting that with the mixture of strength and vulnerability that is the damaged but recovering Flora. In presenting a range of utterly believable small-town characters, Potter's delivery is perfect."
AudioFile Magazine

"An emotionally powerful page-turner. Fans of kick-ass female investigators will be well satisfied."—Publishers Weekly

“Gardner juggles multiple narratives . . . with ease. A sensitive exploration of trauma and its insidious, lasting effects.”-Kirkus Reviews

Loved it!

Really enjoyed D.D’s evolution- from a hard-nosed, take no BS, always gotta be in charge, detective, to a self-aware, caring wife, mother, partner, team player, dog owner. Keith is the perfect partner for Flora - who else would ever understand what she’d endured and still love her. Can’t wait to meet again:-)
Kirsten Potter brought every character to life brilliantly! My husband heard what I was listening to and was truly impressed.
Will check out the FBI profiler series next.

Great story line

I loved this story, at first I thought I was not going to like the performance but I was pleasantly mistaken.

Most Realistic Female Leads In The Genre

Each of the three main protagonists in this story - Abduction Survivor/Vigilante Flora Dane; Boston PD Sergeant-Detective D.D.Warren; and FBI Special Agent Kimberly Quincy - are dedicated, fiercely-driven crime investigators.. but also believably vulnerable and in love with their children, pets, and partners. They each occasionally come across as having a proverbial "chip on her shoulder" (okay, okay.. they're bitchy) - but also come by those personalities honestly and have enough empathy-worthy aspects to their personal lives that they come across as likable. Lisa Gardner does a fantastic job walking that line between "tough" and "lovable" that makes female sleuths hard to get right. She got it right in this one.
Unfortunately, this is easily the weakest narrative in the entire 'Warren and Dane' series: the events and plot twists/turns strain credulity just a little bit too much, for example. Gardner also comes dangerously close to crossing the line between "sardonic" and "snarky" with her dialogue in this offering.

On the other hand, this is the best performance that I have heard from Kirsten Potter. Her diction, timbre, cadence, and pacing are typically spot-on.. but her voice-acting is genuinely unimpeachable and her understanding of the tone of the novel is legitimately pitch-perfect. Potter's emotiveness while reading tension-filled scenes is actually moving.

Altogether, I rate 'When You See Me: A Novel' a truly disappointing 5 stars out of 10. It's definitely worth a listen - and a shining example of how to write strong female leads - but there are far better Gardner Mystery-Thrillers available for your Credit.
