“Irresistible . . . High drama at the beach, starring four sexy, surfing siblings and their deadbeat, famous-crooner dad.”—People

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Washington Post, Time, Marie Claire, PopSugar, Parade, Teen Vogue, Self, She Reads

Four famous siblings throw an epic party to celebrate the end of the summer. But over the course of twenty-four hours, the family drama that ensues will change their lives forever.

Malibu: August 1983. It’s the day of Nina Riva’s annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over—especially as the offspring of the legendary singer Mick Riva.

The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself, who never wanted to be the center of attention, and who has also just been very publicly abandoned by her pro tennis player husband. Oh, and maybe Hud—because it is long past time for him to confess something to the brother from whom he’s been inseparable since birth.

Jay, on the other hand, is counting the minutes until nightfall, when the girl he can’t stop thinking about promised she’ll be there.

And Kit has a couple secrets of her own—including a guest she invited without consulting anyone.

By midnight the party will be completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family’s generations will all come rising to the surface.

Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them . . . and what they will leave behind.

Ce que les critiques en disent

“Reid has once again crafted a fast-paced, engaging novel that smoothly transports readers between decades and story lines.” (The Washington Post)

"If summer could somehow fit into a book, then you’d find it in Malibu Rising.” (Oprah Daily)

“Reid’s descriptions of Malibu are so evocative that readers will swear they feel the sea breeze on their faces or the grit of the sand between their toes.... A compulsively readable story about the bonds between family members and the power of breaking free.” (Kirkus Reviews)

A perfect summer read

I was halfway through this book, and didn’t want to finish it because then it would be over. I really enjoyed the setting of Malibu (one of my fave places), and the characters were really great. I desperately want there to be a sequel!

Another winner

Love the way Jenkins Reid creates such complex and 3 dimensional characters who make you feel what they feel. It’s always hard to leave them behind when I reach the end of the story.

Took some time

This story took some time to sink it's teeth into me. No complaints on the Narrator or even the structure or setting of the story. The imagery was also enjoyable, but I think I wasn't all that invested in the active culture, which is almost like another character itself.

So in the beginning I often found myself going to other books because these characters and what they were experiencing just wasn't all that exciting or compelling.

By the time I made it to part two it felt like the climb was over and I could now coast downwards towards the conclusion and it felt much more enticing in its pacing.

Anyone that enjoys the culture and or universe created here, that retro americana escapism then this will be a very quick read for you. If like me, you've started and are unsure, stick with it... it's not something you'll regret.

An enticing story about intergenerational trauma

This book is amazing. I was hesitant to read/listen to it because reviews described it as a "summer read," which is a genre I'm not a fan off. Although the story is clever and airing on the light side given it's focus, it is ultimately a beautiful, clever and enticing story about breaking the cycle of intergenerational trauma, peppered with cute celebrity references and a similarly cute critique of celebrity culture. The book isn't heavy insofar as it has the unresolved-ness and heartbreak of reality, and thus flirts with fantasy in the way all story's about family and trauma that are guided by closure and hope do, but the story is deep, relatable and captivating. It is one of my favourite books I've gotten on audible thus far.

Viva the Rivas! 👏

Such a fun read! Complex family dynamics this book is full of humour and humanity. I couldn’t stop. The imagery of the author evokes as we are through the family’s history is so enjoyable. Wonderful summer read. Just get it!

FANTASTIC Summer Read!!!

This book was FANTASTIC and I couldn’t stop listening. Julia Whelan, as usual, was a FANTASTIC narrator and Taylor Jenkins Reid, as usual, created a FANTASTIC story/set of characters. I Can’t wait to see the FANTASTIC movie or show (we all know there will be one eventually).

Loved it

I loved this book. I love the narrator! I also read a couple other of her books and loved the easter eggs throughout. I recognized Mick Reva and realized that she was one of Evelyn's husbands right off the hop. That is also a great read/listen. All in all, I quickly finished this book and loved how it ended. Go Nina Go!

The characters were great

I like how Taylor weaved the character's stories together and that there is mention of character's from other books. The story has love, tragedy, duty, growing and becoming who you were meant to be.
