Description

Surviving the zombie apocalypse requires supplies—like booze, weapons, and toilet paper—in the second prequel to the Mountain Man series.

Living off the land and adapting to a changing environment takes a special individual with the unique skills, training, and determination necessary to survive. Gus Berry is not that individual. The former house painter barely made it out of Annapolis as its population underwent a violent transformation, leaving everyone he knew or loved dead—or undead.

Now, Gus needs food and booze, weapons and armor, clothing that fits, and above all, toilet paper, preferably two-ply. But getting his hands on any of these essentials requires the one thing he can’t face doing, and that’s leaving his modern mountain fortress and returning to Annapolis and the horrors that roam its streets in search of the living.

With winter looming, Gus must procure these much-needed supplies quickly, before the snow piles too high and blocks the roads. And that’s when he’ll face the greatest challenge of all: maintaining his sanity . . .

Among the very best post-apocalyptic thrillers

This series is hands down one of the best, or even perhaps THE best, post-apocalyptic thrillers out there. RC Bray's narration makes listening an immersive experience and in my opinion is absolutely perfect for the main character, Gus Berry. Even if you are not much into zombies per se, don't pass on this series. It is much much more than just another zombie thriller. It is about human survival and human frailties in a dark, permanently changed world.

loved this 2nd prequel. It did not disappoint.

The first prequel is in my top 5 audible books. this book is right next to it now.

It has a slow burn with spikes of action and that works great for me.

I found it interesting to see Gus descend into the "mountain man". The closure of some of the first prequel characters, the dreams and flash back moments and the dash of fore shadowing makes this book interesting and is a perfect bridge between the first prequel and Mountain Man 1.

I found very drunk Gus to be extremely annoying. To me, that speaks wonders of Blackmore's skills as a writer, as irl that person would be extremely annoying.

Entertaining and well written

Combine an author with a great sense of humour and a knowledge of the inner dialogue of an average, blue collar guy with one of the best narrators around, and you have this hard to pause listen. I'm writing this for both of the prequels as both were excellent and a really fun listen. Thank you both for great audiobooks!

The Gus we know and love

I am a total fan of The Mountain Man series. I gave it only 4 stars because it felt like story was getting thin. The time has come to leave the story alone and move on. Otherwise it was more of the same Gus Berry we've grown to love.

Good ol' Gus.

Loved revisiting the Gus we all know and love... not the wishy-washy guy he became in the last two books. Them Early Days is absolutely entertaining with just enough action to keep listeners in suspense. But, most important, this prequel allowed us to fill in the gaps of our hero's early days on the mountain and provide even deeper insights into what makes Gus tick. As always, R.C. Bray works his narration magic and makes us laugh when he orally displays some of Gus' boistrous bodily functions. And these weren't the only laughs the book offfers. All in all, this is a great additon to the Mountain Man series with an ending that leaves us cringing since we know it represents a horror on which Gus is about to embark.

Loads of fun.

If this entire book was Gus just scavenging for supplies I'd have still been happy. There is definitely an over shadowing anxiety for his future. How long can he last in this new world? I'll keep buying these novels if Keith keeps writing them. 🥂

Great story

Excellent post apocalyptic story, the toilet paper obsession is a little concerning but understandable lol.

back to normal

So glad to have another Gus story. The last one was such a big disappointment. Great story with gripping moments. Makes you wonder what would have happened, if he had gone to bear skin lake. And the whole Tobi thing makes you choke. Looking forward for more!
