Story
In the United States, teenagers can focus on one task for only sixty-five seconds at a time, and office workers average only three minutes. Like so many of us, Johann Hari was finding that constantly switching from device to device and tab to tab was a diminishing and depressing way to live. He tried all sorts of self-help solutions—even abandoning his phone for three months—but nothing seemed to work. So Hari went on an epic journey across the world to interview the leading experts on human attention—and he discovered that everything we think we know about this crisis is wrong.

Story
The causes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder range from severe neglect to monstrous abuse. Many survivors grew up in houses that were not homes-in families that were as loveless as orphanages and sometimes as dangerous. If you felt unwanted, unliked, rejected, hated, and/or despised for a lengthy portion of your childhood, trauma may be deeply engrained in your mind, soul, and body. This book is a practical guide to recovering from lingering childhood trauma. It is copiously illustrated with examples of the author's and his clients' journeys of recovering.

Story
This urgent and eye-opening book makes the case that protecting humanity's future is the central challenge of our time. If all goes well, human history is just beginning. Our species could survive for billions of years - enough time to end disease, poverty, and injustice, and to flourish in ways unimaginable today. But this vast future is at risk. With the advent of nuclear weapons, humanity entered a new age, where we face existential catastrophes - those from which we could never come back.

Publisher's Summary
From the New York Times best-selling author of Chasing the Scream, a radically new way of thinking about depression and anxiety.
What really causes depression and anxiety - and how can we really solve them? Award-winning journalist Johann Hari suffered from depression since he was a child and started taking antidepressants when he was a teenager. He was told that his problems were caused by a chemical imbalance in his brain. As an adult, trained in the social sciences, he began to investigate whether this was true - and he learned that almost everything we have been told about depression and anxiety is wrong.
Across the world, Hari found social scientists who were uncovering evidence that depression and anxiety are not caused by a chemical imbalance in our brains. In fact, they are largely caused by key problems with the way we live today. Hari's journey took him from a mind-blowing series of experiments in Baltimore, to an Amish community in Indiana, to an uprising in Berlin.
Once he had uncovered nine real causes of depression and anxiety, they led him to scientists who are discovering seven very different solutions - ones that work. It is an epic journey that will change how we think about one of the biggest crises in our culture today.

Perfect for audible.
The book itself is engaging and well written. However, I did find some of the author's argumentation to be inconsistent. He attributes a laundry list of human traits to evolution, but our aversion to relative poverty is purely the result of capitalism.
There is something appealing about having a book narrated by the author. Hari also happens to be a good narrator.

A moving account of human connection
Our culture encourages a lack of social connection, then encourages us to label the resulting disorders as mental illness and to treat that with drugs. This account explores the science, pseudoscience and economic drivers behind those attitudes. It also describes ways of reconnecting, reestablishing compassion as a core value. Hari is very clear that economic insecurity and workaholism can be helped by introducing a guaranteed basic income, and that pilot projects show this reduces anxiety and depression. He covers a lot of ground in a coherent way.

Changed my attitude towards depression
Made me think, reflect on my “get over it/suck it up” attitude, and now i feel. I understand depression/anxiety better, and i will treat people differently that have it & help them if i can.
Johann does an excellent job as narrator...always best hearing the author narrate, seems personal.
Excellent book. For any adult, or almost adult.

Profound Interesting Informative and Helpful
A profound book! I found it to be interesting informative and helpful. Quite a lot of useful ideas from various scientific research studies including one involving residents of Dauphin MB (as a Canadian I found this intriguing) in the 1970's receiving a guaranteed income "Buried in those dusty boxes of data at the Canadian National Archives Evelyn might have found one of the most important antidepressants for the 21st century"
