Publisher's Summary

WHO DO YOU LOVE?

One question, a split-second decision, and Brian Darby lies dead on the kitchen floor. His wife, state police trooper Tessa Leoni, claims to have shot him in self-defense, and bears the bruises to back up her tale. For veteran detective D. D. Warren it should be an open-and-shut case. But where is their six-year-old daughter?

AND HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO . . .

As the homicide investigation ratchets into a frantic statewide search for a missing child, D. D. Warren must partner with former lover Bobby Dodge to break through the blue wall of police brotherhood, seeking to understand the inner workings of a trooper’s mind while also unearthing family secrets. Would a trained police officer truly shoot her own husband? And would a mother harm her own child?

. . . TO SAVE HER?

For Tessa Leoni, the worst has not yet happened. She is walking a tightrope, with nowhere to turn, no one to trust, as the clock ticks down to a terrifying deadline. She has one goal in sight, and she will use every ounce of her training, every trick at her disposal, to do what must be done. No sacrifice is too great, no action unthinkable. A mother knows who she loves. And all others will be made to pay.

Love you more . . .

"Tessa Leoni is a dedicated single mom when she is swept away by a man who turns out to be the wrong guy. Emotionally true, harrowing, and unputdownable. Brava, Lisa Gardner!" (Lisa Scottoline)
"A heart-pounding tale of family drama by the Mozart of thriller writers. I could not tear myself away." (Tess Gerritsen)

Not one of her better novels.

I found the material somewhat annoying especially the referral to the song “My two front teeth”. Other repetitive adjectives were also very annoying. I Don’t recommend this book.

"Decent" Entry in the 'Warren/Dane' Series

First of all: you *really* have to suspend logic to accept the plot in this book (the twists and turns are so incredibly complex that the level of implausibility borders on impossibility). You will definitely debate with yourself: "But for that to happen.."

Just accept the plot holes and enjoy the ride.
Yes, it's ludicrous - but the imagination required to conceive of a story like this is impressive. Lisa Gardner has balls of steel to even *attempt* it.
Her prose/vocabulary is capable; her dialogue is realistic (given the scenario); and her description is characterically mind's-eye vivid and viscerally-affecting.

Unfortunately, Random House Audio dropped the ball a little bit casting Katie McNichol to read the 'Tessa Leoni' POV parts. Kirsten Potter's narration of the overall story is typically spot-on, but McNichol reads with an overdramatic tone and a sibilance that audio engineers struggle to soften. Don't get me wrong - the performance is professional - but "average" at best.

Given the frequently unrealistic plot and somewhat subpar delivery, I rate this audiobook a respectable 6.5 stars out of 10. It's not as gritty/gruesome/disturbing as Gardner fans might expect.. but this imaginative thriller is more than acceptable. Can recommend.
