America is a barren landscape of smoldering ashes, devoid of life except for those people still struggling to scratch out some type of existence. Amidst this destruction, a father and his young son walk, always toward the coast, but with no real understanding that circumstances will improve once they arrive. Still, they persevere, and their relationship comes to represent goodness in a world of utter devastation.

It is three in the morning when Bobby Western plunges from the Coast Guard tender into darkness. His dive light illuminates the sunken jet, nine bodies still buckled in their seats, hair floating, eyes devoid of speculation. Missing from the site are the pilot’s bag, the plane’s black box, and the tenth passenger. A collateral witness to machinations that can only bring him harm, Western is shadowed in body and spirit—by men with badges; by the ghost of his father, inventor of the bomb that melted glass and flesh in Hiroshima; and by his sister, the love and ruin of his soul.

The year is A.D. 922. A refined Arab courtier, representative of the powerful Caliph of Baghdad, encounters a party of Viking warriors who are journeying to the barbaric North. He is appalled by their Viking customs - the wanton sexuality of their pale, angular women, their disregard for cleanliness...their cold-blooded human sacrifices. But it is not until they reach the depths of the Northland that the courtier learns the horrifying and inescapable truth.

Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

It was to be the war to end all wars, and it began at 11:15 on the morning of June 28, 1914, in an outpost of the Austro-Hungarian Empire called Sarajevo. It would officially end nearly five years later. Unofficially, however, it has never ended: Many of the horrors we live with today are rooted in the First World War. The Great War left millions of civilians and soldiers maimed or dead. It also saw the creation of new technologies of destruction: tanks, planes, and submarines; machine guns and field artillery; poison gas and chemical warfare.

Description
Llewelyn Moss is hunting antelope near the Texas-Mexico border when he stumbles upon several dead men, a big stash of heroin, and more than two million dollars in cash. He takes off with the money, and the hunter becomes the haunted. A drug cartel hires a former Special Forces agent to track down the loot, and a ruthless killer joins the chase as well. Also looking for Moss is the aging Sheriff Bell, a World War II veteran who may be Moss' only hope for survival.
Raw and lean, No Country for Old Men is another masterpiece from one of America's acclaimed novelists.
Ce que les critiques en disent
"No Country for Old Men gets off to a riveting start as a sort of new wave, hard-boiled Western....Harrowing, propulsive drama." (The New York Times)
"A mesmerizing modern-day western....While the action of the novel thrills, it's the sensitivity and wisdom of Sheriff Bell that makes the book a profound meditation on the battle between good and evil and the roles choice and chance play in the shaping of a life." (Publishers Weekly)
"Shades of Dostoyevsky, Hemingway, and Faulkner resonate in McCarthy's blend of lyrical narrative, staccato dialogue, and action-packed scenes splattered with bullets and blood. McCarthy fans will revel in the author's renderings of the raw landscapes of Mexico and the Southwest and the precarious souls scattered along the border that separates the two." (Booklist)

Dark and nihilistic, deserving of the America’s it depicts
Consistent with the themes of McCarthy’s other work, this tale of bad decisions and worse consequences, set against the existential backdrop of a broken American, is satisfying and troubling.
McCarthy’s characters are presented with depth and intimacy, their voices and that of the narrator, blending seamlessly, so the story’s progression is smooth and inviting.
Even though there is abundant violence, McCarthy treats it in a subdued fashion.
Not so much his “good guy” characters’ ongoing crises of conscience and conviction. Their collective distress and resignation, over lost ideals and false promises, is drawn in stark relief. The result is a story that is depressingly relevant to this day, for young and old alike, in too many countries to count.

Just Okay
I read it was originally written as a screenplay That is probably why the novel is so short. Half the length of a lot of book I listen too. Cormac McCarthy is a good story teller. I enjoyed listening to the book, well enough to Finish it. Tom Stechschulte is very good narrator, I’ll look to see what else he has narrated . Over all , the story was too predictable. No twists or turns . Nothing unexpected happened . Not very entertaining .

Masterpiece
After watching the movie roughly ten times or so, I finally gave the book a listen. Even though I knew what was coming, it was amazing. I actually wish I'd read the book before watching the film and experience the story this way for the first time. Sheriff Bell is a lot more fleshed out and the feeling and theme hits home a little more. The book also made me appreciate the movie even more-the Coen's did a really good job of adapting the story and made wise decisions on where to trim the edges.
The Narrator's performance was great as well.
10/10. Give it a go.

Good story and a classic
Good story with excellent narration.
It does fall flat a bit towards the end, with a rather anticlimactic finish to our exciting character (Moss).
I don’t want to say much more in fear to spoil if for a potential reader, but I did get quite disappointed.
