Publisher's Summary

A dark, compelling new thriller from best-selling authors Sarah A. Denzil and Anni Taylor

Young backpackers Gemma and Hayley arrive at a remote fruit farm in Australia’s Northern Territory, out of money and desperate for work.

The weeks go on, a blur of fruit picking, parties, campfires and wading beneath waterfalls in the nearby hot springs. Until the night the girls find themselves on a dark highway, bruised and bloodied.

Senior Detective Bronwen McKay and psychologist Megan Arlotti question the terrified girls. But Hayley and Gemma are telling two very different stories of what happened to them over the past three months.

Which story is the truth, and what are the girls covering up? A suspenseful thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end.

I enjoyed it... mostly.

The story kept me engaged right up until the last hour and a half or so. I did find the ending to be a bit wandering and convoluted. I also found the two young women to be a bit naive, but I was able to set aside my disbelief for the sake of the story. The narrator was pretty good, although I did find that a few of her characters, especially the male ones, sounded very similar to each other and sometimes it was difficult to tell them apart. But I get it, it's hard for a woman to do male voices and vice versa. Generally I really enjoyed the story and found it to be quite compelling.

Feels like a copycat

I've never written a review here yet, but felt compelled. I found the story very interesting and powered through it. The ending for me was completely unexpected and left me unsure how to feel, but I actually appreciate am ending that leaves me conflicted.

HOWEVER, this storyline feels 100% ripped off from Nine Perfect Strangers which was published before this novel. There's nothing wrong with taking inspiration from other sources, but in my opinion this went too far in basically recycling someone else's work. That's why I rated the story do low.

Kept Me Engaged With Unique Plot

A variety of interesting characters, moments that made my heart race throughout, and a mystery to put together. I definitely kept listening past my bed time too often!

I really enjoyed the story but you do have to hold for disbelief for one element for it to work. With that in mind, it was tricky for me to know if it was justified how the characters would act but if one goes along with the plot details then it is a unique premise indeed!

Definitely one for Netflix

While there were some aspects of the plot that were easy to spot, there was a whole other layer, possibly two, lying in wait underneath.

Peppered throughout were smaller shocking moments that had my eyebrows raising sky high and little exclamations escaping my lips.

Well narrated, predictable plot

Hayley and Gemma are picked up by the police. There is a burning semi-truck, a dead man, and the driver of the truck is very injured. Hayley and Gemma tell a similar story of how they were kidnapped by the dead man, escaped, and were running away when the truck came over the hill, tried to avoid them, and killed their kidnappers. Everything seems to fit but the timelines their stories don't match up. One says they were held for weeks, the other says months. The only real connection is that they were both employed by a mango farm that hires lots of transient labour.

The plot is predictable. There is a small twist at the end but as for the rest of the plot points they are pretty obvious by chapter 10. It is well narrated. Some of the characters are interesting.

Super well done...and therefore, very disturbing

Poison Orchids kept me guessing the entire time, up until the very end when I was left with a lingering feeling of unease. This book seriously creeped me out. Truly.

I enjoyed the constant guessing and plot twists. The ending and storyline were impossible to predict for sure due to the psychological aspects to the story. I found this to be a very well written and disturbing read where I didn’t feel like anything was safe or could be counted on.

If you’re looking for a story that’ll keep you constantly trying to pinpoint the true series of events that have happened, one that feels like you’re reading/listening to a truly strange, thriller episode of Criminal Minds or some CSI episode, I recommend this book!

I wanted to know more about the girls!

Because I wanted to know more about the 2 girls, this book hooked me from the very beginning. The story kept me guessing and I couldn't wait til I could listen to some more. I think Tate's character could have been better developed, perhaps a chapter or two could have been told from his point of view. I thought narration was great & overall was an enjoyable book.

surprises and twists will keep you wanting more

At first I thought this book was slow and I wasn't going to enjoy it or finish it. I'm glad I gave it a chance though. once I got in to it I didn't want to stop listening. a few twists and surprises kept me wanting to hear more. I sped up the narration a bit and it made all the difference. I'd recommend this book but be warned that it may trigger some individuals who have lived through trauma.
