Description

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Experience the book that started the Quiet Movement and revolutionized how the world sees introverts—and how introverts see themselves—by offering validation, inclusion, and inspiration

“Superbly researched, deeply insightful, and a fascinating read,
Quiet is an indispensable resource for anyone who wants to understand the gifts of the introverted half of the population.”—Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR—
People, O: The Oprah Magazine, Christian Science Monitor, Inc., Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews

At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society.

In Quiet, Susan Cain argues that we dramatically undervalue introverts and shows how much we lose in doing so. She charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal throughout the twentieth century and explores how deeply it has come to permeate our culture. She also introduces us to successful introverts—from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Passionately argued, impeccably researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how they see themselves.

Ce que les critiques en disent

2013, Carnegie Medal, Long-listed

2012, Goodreads.com Readers Choice Award for Best Debut Author and Best Nonfiction Book of the Year, Winner

“As an introvert often called upon to behave like an extrovert, I found the information in this book revealing and helpful. Drawing on neuroscientific research and many case reports, Susan Cain explains the advantages and potentials of introversion and of being quiet in a noisy world.” (Andrew Weil, author of Healthy Aging and Spontaneous Happiness)

“Susan Cain has done a superb job of sifting through decades of complex research on introversion, extroversion, and sensitivity—this book will be a boon for the many highly sensitive people who are also introverts.” (Elaine Aron, author of The Highly Sensitive Person)

Gave me confidence as an introvert

this book should be read by any introvert who has ever felt out of place in an extroverted world. only critique is that some of the stories used to illustrate her points can be a little long winded. other than that, a must read/listen! #Audible1

The dichotomy of personality traits

This book made me think that introverts are much more adept at managing in an extroverted world than extroverts are in adapting to an introverted world. I thought about this during the first years of Covid and how it affected both personality types. Introverts could not get away from family, and extroverts could not go out to engage in external activities. Painful for all, but I think it was easier for the introverted to grab quiet time - even if it was to hide away in the bathroom/stay up later than everyone else, where the extrovert took to zoom calls, board games etc.
The book just helped to solidify the cruel words that were spoken to me by my ex; cold/unfriendly/shy/unsociable. The couple that struggled with his need for weekly dinners and hers for not to have them at all brought back a lot of memories. I’m okay with who I am, I don’t feel guilty for not attending events, and I have a good sense of “no” and am not afraid to say it, when it clearly is not something I want to do.
If you struggle with the labels that other people have of you, it’s their problem, but not easy to navigate. Perhaps this book will help.

I cant stop talking about this book!

I had to read a few chapter of this book for a university class and I couldn’t put it down! I think I finished it in a day and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. It makes me feel empowered as an introvert myself and gives me hope.

Thank you Susan 💕

Relatable, compelling, and full of insight

Susan Cain uses real life examples to show that extroversion may not deserve the pedestal it currently sits on. She shows a relatively recent movement from a virtue of character to a virtue of personality and uses hard facts to help the reader understand the need for all personality types not only in the workplace, but life in general.
Susan has a very compelling story to tell for everyone. Those who may feel introversion is a foreign concept could gain insight as to how to best interact with introverts.
As a worker in a high energy, extrovert dominated business I often found myself feeling like I'm not keeping up with people who are gregarious by nature or those who get into heated arguments with each other in meetings. This book has helped me find a quiet strength in being comfortable with who I am and what I can bring to the table.
The audiobook version of this book is easy to digest and well paced. The story unfolds like a well crafted, journalistic peice.

Eye-opening!

An excellent book. Susan Cain provides the reader (listener) with a thorough understanding of the difference between introverts and extroverts, and how each type’s actions are often misunderstood by the other. A must read for introverts and extroverts alike. And the narration is impeccable.
