Publisher's Summary

Darby Kane thrills with this twisty domestic suspense novel that asks one central question: Shouldn’t a dead husband stay dead?

Lila Ridgefield lives in an idyllic college town, but not everything is what it seems. Lila isn’t what she seems.

A student vanished months ago. Now, Lila’s husband, Aaron, is also missing. At first these cases are treated as horrible coincidences until it’s discovered the student is really the third of three unexplained disappearances over the last few years. The police are desperate to find the connection, if there even is one. Little do they know they might be stumbling over only part of the truth.... With the small town in an uproar, everyone is worried about the whereabouts of their beloved high school teacher. Everyone except Lila, his wife.

She’s definitely confused about her missing husband but only because she was the last person to see his body, and now it’s gone.

Great listen!

I enjoyed the story and the narration. Not too complicated if you turn it on and off in the car. You may sit in the car a little longer however.

ALL STAR

Star 1 goes to the gripping mystery
Star 2 goes to the narrator
Star 3 goes to the sound effects
Audio is maturing exponentially. Thoroughly enjoyed and used reverse tool to ensure not a drop of background was missed or overlooked.

Twisty Domestic Thriller

I almost stopped listening to this book because of the narrator. She always sounds very bored and has a gravelly voice that did not fit the protagonist in this story and is hard to listen to. I liked the story so much though that I kept listening and glad I did. It is a good story and keeps you guessing. Had a satisfying ending for me and all the loose ends tied up nicely. Recommended to read the book, not the Audible.

It was okay.

I’m not sorry I bought it but it wasn’t fantastic. I’m pretty picky though and expect quite a bit from a book to get five stars.

Mixed feelings...

I have the utmost respect for authors and can't imagine the sweat and tears that go into writing a book. This book kept me very interested in the story and the narrator was outstanding.

The author told a wonderful story with good character development. If I hadn't listened to the last few chapters I would have been totally happy with the story.

What is revealed in the last few chapters unravels the previous hours and hours of character development, because in light of the conclusion, the actions of the characters throughout the rest of the book become very unlikely to the point of being unbelievable.

The twist ending feels insulting because it seems to involve characters from a book that I haven't read or listened to, not the one I just finished.

That being said, and without spoiling what there is, I do not regret spending time listening to this book because I really enjoyed the narrator and most of the story until the slap in the face at the end.

Great book

Listened on a long 7 hour car trip with my 18 year old daughter. We both loved it and couldn’t wait to finish it on the way home!

The most dull narration ever prize goes to...

I struggled to finish it. The first thing that struck me right at the beginning was the horrible narration, I couldn't stand the flat bored voice, and often couldn't decipher which character was speaking, it all sounded the same. It sounded like the narrator was reading a shopping list or some other mundane material with enormous indifference, maybe she also found this book quite dull. Her voice felt like she really didn't want to be there. It was this exceptionally bad that this was the first time I googled the narrator's name and was astounded to find out she was one of the most popular narrators out there. I don't understand how it can be in light of the disastrous performance here. How come nobody with the production tried to improve the narration? There are other listeners who had the same experience like me, so it's not just me. Maybe if I read this book, instead of listening, I had a better opinion on this book.

The idea behind the story is interesting, it started well, but the execution lacked and the plot itself dragged for too long. I lost interest many times, mainly listened to the audible while having a walk outside, unlike with more captivating stories where I almost need to make excuses to listen to it whenever I can. For me it says it all.

The twist wasn't a surprise for me, was actually pretty much what I suspected from the start. I hoped it would be something different but no such luck. I don't understand the raving reviews. This book is nothing special and was ok for passing the time.

Nah

Narration: 🙉
Monotone-ish and croaky. The characters sound too similar (unless they’re all supposed to be elderly grandparents)

Atmosphere: 🥱
Came for a thriller, got a children’s book. “The ranch house” “The athletic building” “The neighbour talking to fill the silence”

POVs: 😒
Repetitive. I’ve spent the last hour hearing a thousand different thoughts in Lila’s head going over how she is waiting for something to be discovered, and how she hates her husband.
Lila could be anything from an abusive psychopath herself to a confused, desperate, abused spouse but she’s written as robotic and flat to achieve that. All her thoughts are her observing her world with no development or personality insights whatsoever. No emotion or depth where we experience her struggling with hating and loving her spouse, fearing yet needing him, or even enjoying the drama and plotting/scheming.

All the characters read like living point-form!

Show’n’tell: 👎 All tell (so many times), no show. Like a kindergartener describing their crayon set because they forgot to bring it.

Reading journey: 👎
Your chain-smoking rideshare driver taking you around the same suburban block, pointing out the same attraction. Over and over. And over. In a nice sedan with climate control and comfy seats, but you have places to go and better things to do.

Vibe: 🙄🥱😐
