Description

To the harsh domain of Rockbound - governed by the sternly righteous and rapacious Uriah Jung - comes the youthful David Jung to claim his small share of the island. Filled with dreamy optimism and a love for the unspoken promises of the night sky, David tries to find his way in a narrow, unforgiving, and controlled world. His conflicts are both internal and external, locking him in an unceasing struggle for survival; sometimes the sea is his enemy, sometimes his own rude behavior, sometimes his best friend Gershom Born, sometimes his secret love for the island teacher Mary Dauphiny; but always, inevitably, his Jung relatives and their manifold ambitions for money and power.

The balance of life on Rockbound is precarious and thus fiercely guarded by all who inhabit its lonely domain, but just as a sudden change in the direction of the wind can lead to certain peril at sea, so too can the sudden change in the direction of a man's heart lead to a danger altogether unknown.

Enormously evocative of the power, terror, and dramatic beauty of the Atlantic sea, and unrelenting in its portrait of back-breaking labour, cunning bitterness, and family strife, Rockbound is a story of many passions - love, pride, greed, and yearning - all formed and buffeted on a small island by an unyielding wind and the rocky landscape of the human spirit.

Rockbound - Perfect for Car Trip to Nova Scotia

Although published in 1928 this book won the 2005 "Canada Reads" competition. I was reminded of it prior to a Summer Holiday to Nova Scotia's South Shore in August of this year and purchased it for play on the car trip. Perfect to heighten my excitement about visiting Nova Scotia and the South Shore (in particular). This is a great storey with heroes, villains, complicated love affairs, feuding families, jealousy, man against a harsh environment and the ultimate triumph of the Protagonist. The narration is wonderful. James Banning must have spent time becoming thoroughly familiar with the German/Dutch accents and peculiar vocabulary of Lunenburg County. It's a great story, well told. #Audible1

I wish I had this to read for Canadian Literature

I just moved to the south shore near Sable River in Nova Scotia. South of where this is set. I find the accent more in Cape Sable Island. I have an upper Canada accent so I really notice theirs. The narrator was very good. The story with the tragic ‘accident’ at sea was very engaging. Just bought some Tancook Island cabbage seeds, so that’s a thing.

Surprisingly good!

I didn't expect much from this book so I was surprised to be so drawn into it. Even though I know nothing about boats or fishing, the story was so engaging that my ignorance did not lessen my enjoyment. Narration was excellent.

I loved the Story but the narration was a bit fast

I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Having lived on a sailboat for 3 years and grown up spending many a summer on the great lakes, I was entranced with the connections to the sea. Day created real people, real circumstances and breathed life into the words with the accents and vernacular. The narration picked up the accents and tones perfectly as well. My only problem was that I often found the narration to be too fast. A slower pace would have let the words dance a little longer in my mind where images were continually being conjured. Just a tad slower in the telling - then it would have been perfect.
