Publisher's Summary

When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it at first seems no more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes.

Given to Armand Gamache as a gift the first day of his new job, the map eventually leads him to shattering secrets. To an old friend and older adversary. It leads the former Chief of Homicide for the Sûreté du Québec to places even he is afraid to go. But must.

And there he finds four young cadets in the Sûreté academy, and a dead professor. And, with the body, a copy of the old, odd map.

Everywhere Gamache turns, he sees Amelia Choquet, one of the cadets. Tattooed and pierced. Guarded and angry. Amelia is more likely to be found on the other side of a police line-up. And yet she is in the academy. A protégée of the murdered professor.

The focus of the investigation soon turns to Gamache himself and his mysterious relationship with Amelia, and his possible involvement in the crime. The frantic search for answers takes the investigators back to Three Pines and a stained glass window with its own horrific secrets.

For both Amelia Choquet and Armand Gamache, the time has come for a great reckoning.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny pulls back the layers to reveal a brilliant and emotionally powerful truth in her latest spellbinding audiobook.

What the critics say

“If you haven't listened to this series, start at once. You'll love your stay in Three Pines.”--AudioFile, Earphones Awards Winner

"This book engages the listener immediately and might be Penny’s best one yet...The narration is dramatic and voiced. [Robert] Bathurst has clearly found a comfort level with the characters that is obvious from the many different voices he utilizes to reflect each one’s idiosyncrasies. Reading at a good pace and tempo, the complex story unfolds and eventually all the mysteries are resolved, including one that is revealed in the very last pages. Fans of the series will gobble this up and relish every moment." SoundCommentary.com

"Bathurst is nothing short of perfect, managing the French-Canadian accents deliciously." - St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Wrong narrator

I’m so disappointed that an Englishman was chosen to read a French Canadian book. It really took away from the characters to have an English accent.

One of my favourites!

So far this is top 3 of my favourite Gamache books. Loved it! Narrator is definitely not great though. All the voices sound the same, and the British accent butchering French words was annoying. Could have found a French Canadian for the role. I miss the person who narrated the first few books, he was excellent

By far my favorite Louise Penny book so far... intriguing storyline revealing more of Gamache's past and his compassionate nature.

Right story wrong narrator!

Excellent story! Well written and funny if you can get past the ridiculous British accent of the narrator. Bring back Adam Sims.

Perfect book but..,

This is a stellar story, and the narrator is, of course, a wonderful actor. However, there are many many Canadians that could have done just as good a job and been more believable as a Canadian… Québecois.
It seems odd that was not a criteria.

So much more than just a crime novel

Really loved this audiobook - the story was enthralling, the narration excellent, and the layers of the character development kept me hooked.

Another great entry

I loved this book - especially the cadet characters, and the “resolution” with Gamache’s best friend. Louise Penny does pathos so well. The narrator is also great! He has totally grown on me.

Great story despite inappropriate narrator

Story is the best one yet! The narrator is actually quite good (except I think he makes most of the female characters sound like Mrs Doubtfire!) but just not for this series! Is it really that hard to find an English-speaking French Canadian voice?
