Histoire
On a NUMA training mission in the Caribbean, Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala catch a distress call from a nearby freighter. Leaping into action, they locate a damaged vessel and a dead captain clutching a shotgun. While searching the freighter for clues, Kurt and Joe are ambushed by crew members who seem terrified and disoriented, almost brainwashed. The trawler they were hauling has vanished, taken—the men say—by baffling lights that circled the ship.

Polar shift: It is the name for a phenomenon that may have occurred many times in the past. At the very least, it disorients birds and animals and damages electrical equipment. At its worst, it causes massive eruptions, earthquakes, and climatic changes. At its very worst, it would mean the obliteration of all living matter, and if that happens - exit Earth. Sixty years ago, aHungarian genius discovered how to artificially trigger such a shift, but then his work was lost. Or so it was thought....

An enzyme that will dramatically prolong life has been discovered 2,000 feet down in the North Atlantic, in an area known as "Lost City". But why are the people attempting to harvest it getting killed? Why are the scientists in a remote Greek laboratory disappearing one by one? To Kurt Austin, leader of NUMA's Special Assignments Team, and his colleague Joe Zavala, it's clear they have their work cut out for them, but it may be even bigger than they think.

Description
Juan Cabrillo's first adventure with the Oregon - a state-of-the-art spy ship disguised as a nondescript lumber hauler - takes him and his crew into dangerous waters as they try to put Tibet back in the hands of the Dalai Lama by striking a deal with the Russians and the Chinese.
Cabrillo's gambling chip is a golden Buddha containing records of vast oil reserves in the disputed land. But first he'll have to locate - and steal - the all-important artifact. And there are certain people who would do anything in their power to see him fail....

Great New Concept: The narration just dosnt work
I really tried to like this. I very much enjoy Cussler and the direction he took creating this new series is innovative and interesting and opens the door to a host of amazing possibilities. The narrator is just so wrong for this story. His voice sounds like it would be perfect for a 1950's drag-net style cop book but is way out of place in this setting. And his continual mispronunciation of names places and words and less than stellar Chinese accents makes this book impossible to listen to for more than 20 minutes at a time. I really wanted to get more of this series but seeing as how im 4 weeks now trying to get through this one and he narrated a lot of this series I think I will be moving on to something else.

It's OK
Well, I am huge fan of Clive Cussler and especailly the Oregon Files. This book was just OK. I am glad this book was NOT the first one I listened to or read because I may have not read the others. The narration was not very good and the overall story line was medicore at best. It's a must read if you like reading series in order.
