Description

Featuring a conversation with the authors!

In this spectacular father/son collaboration, Stephen King and Owen King tell the highest of high-stakes stories: What might happen if women disappeared from the world of men?

In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: They become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place....

The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease. Is Evie a medical anomaly to be studied? Or is she a demon who must be slain?

Set in a small Appalachian town whose primary employer is a women's prison, Sleeping Beauties is a wildly provocative, gloriously absorbing father/son collaboration between Stephen King and Owen King.

Not bad, not great

It’s a decent book. In the interview at the end Owen and Stephen King state they were going to write this as a tv show - it shows. This reads more like a weekly tv episode then a novel. So so.

Disappointing

I wanted to love this book, after all it's Stephen King! But... I felt like I could tell when he was writing and when his son Owen was writing. It just didn't have the pacing of a typical King book of the genre. It seemed to go off on too many tangents and subplot developments that didn't seem necessary to the story. I found myself getting bored and wishing something, anything, would happen to push the story on but it tended to get bogged down in so many places. I feel like I'm committing sacrilege because I do enjoy so many of Mr. King' s books.... Just not this one.

Boring

Struggled to finish it. Not enough show don't tell. Corny jokes. Redundant
I am a big Stephen King fan. The person reading the book only had a number of voices that she used for multiple characters so it was confusing.

What did I just read?

Probable the worst Stephen King book ever. lots of nonsense and the story failed to entertain.

Boring book

The story was boring and the characters were poorly developed. I did not become invested in the characters like I usually do with Stephen King's books. The ending was a disappointment - anti-climatic. Don't waste your time on this book.

Love it, except for one thing!

I LOVE this book I have read through and I am listening to the audio book. The book flows well and is great to listen to if you're a Fan of Mr. King! I have one issue with the book, some may view it as small but I have a hard time getting passed, the issue is, her voice. It's ear piercing and honestly causes me pain when certain words are said. With this being said (written) I really enjoy this novel and recommend it! Maybe just turn the volume down!

Perfect narration!! Great characters. Addictive!

She made the characters so real! The story starts a bit slow, but once it gets going, you need to finish it!

King fans will like it :)

As always, King's work is character-driven and there are many characters that are quite intriguing in this book. Story was pretty good, just not as hard-hitting and captivating as his some of his other gems (i.e. It, 11/22/63, The Shining, etc, etc.) but then King's set the bar extremely high for himself. I was hesitating to download this one but, in the end, I'm glad I did. I really do think it's worth the listen. All in all, if you're a fan of King's work, I think it's a worthy addition to your audio library.

Great Collab by father and son

This audio book had me hooked right from the start. The characters have depth and the story keeps you wondering what will happen next. Would LOVE to see this adapted to a mini series and maybe an alternate ending? Great work by a legend and his son, who shows with his skills in writing that he will be just as amazing as his father!

Boring...

This is the first Stephen king book I have ever stopped reading before finishing. It just goes on and on and nothing new happens. Couldn’t get into the characters either.

The story was drawn out and very uneventful.

The story dragged on and seemed to have little content that contributed to the story. This novel felt like 75% filler 25% actual story.

I've Read and Listened to Every King Book

I've read and listened to every King book and I guess you could say he is my favorite author. I didn't finish this one. The story held my interest, but didn't rivet me and quite honestly, I forgot about it until now. It has an interesting and unique concept and I think it's worth the read if nothing else is floating your boat, but I'm pretty sure this is the only King novel I've never finished. I probably will one day, but today is not that day.

Horrible

The worst Stephen King book I have ever heard or read!! I’m a big fan and love his writing. That being said, I think this is by far worst thing He’s ever done. It doesn’t have the story line to support all the political rants. I can look over that if the stories are good enough, but this isn’t that!!!

Couldn't even finish it

A rare miss in a Stephen King novel. I tried to force myself to finish it, but finally gave up.

Sleeping reader

I have read or listened to just about every Stephen King book and unfortunately this one has to go at the bottom of the favorites list.

I found it dragged on way too long in most places and while the premise of the story had promise if felt it got lost down side roads and distractions along the way.

Rather than my usual “don’t want to turn it off” I found myself thinking “I have to get through this and hope it gets better”. It didn’t.

Road Noise

I usually purchase every audio book with Stephen King's name associated with it. Sadly, I did that with Sleeping Beauties. I drive a lot, and I usually have an audio book playing most of the time. I have started Sleeping Beauties twice, and after a half-hour or so, the narration became just road noise. I will try starting the book again, and I hope I can listen long enough that it becomes more interesting than tire noise. I readily admit that I prefer male narrators, but I have truly tried to give Marin Ireland a fair chance. I further admit that I have been unconscious after thirty or forty minutes, so maybe the story gets better later on. I may exercise the Audible option to return the book for a credit, which I have done only once in the ten plus years that I have been an Audible subscriber.

weird, and I don't mean a good weird.

listened to the whole thing in case it turned into a book worth listening to yeah, but it just didn't. I'm not even sure what the hell it was about but I'm not sure the writers did either. narrator needs better material but that's not her fault, otherwise narration was very good.

Just pathetic!!

I love almost all Stephen king novels, but I want my money back on this one. No plot, no purpose, the worst character development and an ending nothing short of lazy. The narrator was ok, but could have done a better job distinguishing the characters

Worst book I've read in a long time

Any additional comments?

It's nice that Uncle Steve wants to help Cousin Owen but guys, just because the father can doesn't mean the son should. Even King's (IMO) weaker works aren't this bad. It went nowhere and nothing happened.

Politics though? Chock full of 'em. I'm betting this was the younger King's idea for the project as this "message in your face - all the time" style seems new, preachy and undesirable.

It also followed what must now be dubbed "The King Plot-wheel" as every step of the book was sadly predictable. Predict the most boring useless plot twist and it would happen.

I was excited to see a new Stephen King book but disappointed it was a collaboration (with anyone). Unfortunately the authors felt they had to teach us a lesson as if we were stupid sheep that needed to be herded in the right direction that only they know. After all, who to best give you a women's true feelings but a couple of men?

Uncle Steve, please pick up the cymbals and bang them together for us like you have for years. Keep us awake at night from fear and not frustration.

CLANG CLANG CLANG {lights out} clang clang clang....
