Description

Featuring a conversation with the authors!

In this spectacular father/son collaboration, Stephen King and Owen King tell the highest of high-stakes stories: What might happen if women disappeared from the world of men?

In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: They become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place....

The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease. Is Evie a medical anomaly to be studied? Or is she a demon who must be slain?

Set in a small Appalachian town whose primary employer is a women's prison, Sleeping Beauties is a wildly provocative, gloriously absorbing father/son collaboration between Stephen King and Owen King.

Not bad, not great

It’s a decent book. In the interview at the end Owen and Stephen King state they were going to write this as a tv show - it shows. This reads more like a weekly tv episode then a novel. So so.

Disappointing

I wanted to love this book, after all it's Stephen King! But... I felt like I could tell when he was writing and when his son Owen was writing. It just didn't have the pacing of a typical King book of the genre. It seemed to go off on too many tangents and subplot developments that didn't seem necessary to the story. I found myself getting bored and wishing something, anything, would happen to push the story on but it tended to get bogged down in so many places. I feel like I'm committing sacrilege because I do enjoy so many of Mr. King' s books.... Just not this one.

Boring book

The story was boring and the characters were poorly developed. I did not become invested in the characters like I usually do with Stephen King's books. The ending was a disappointment - anti-climatic. Don't waste your time on this book.

Love it, except for one thing!

I LOVE this book I have read through and I am listening to the audio book. The book flows well and is great to listen to if you're a Fan of Mr. King! I have one issue with the book, some may view it as small but I have a hard time getting passed, the issue is, her voice. It's ear piercing and honestly causes me pain when certain words are said. With this being said (written) I really enjoy this novel and recommend it! Maybe just turn the volume down!

Perfect narration!! Great characters. Addictive!

She made the characters so real! The story starts a bit slow, but once it gets going, you need to finish it!

King fans will like it :)

As always, King's work is character-driven and there are many characters that are quite intriguing in this book. Story was pretty good, just not as hard-hitting and captivating as his some of his other gems (i.e. It, 11/22/63, The Shining, etc, etc.) but then King's set the bar extremely high for himself. I was hesitating to download this one but, in the end, I'm glad I did. I really do think it's worth the listen. All in all, if you're a fan of King's work, I think it's a worthy addition to your audio library.

Great Collab by father and son

This audio book had me hooked right from the start. The characters have depth and the story keeps you wondering what will happen next. Would LOVE to see this adapted to a mini series and maybe an alternate ending? Great work by a legend and his son, who shows with his skills in writing that he will be just as amazing as his father!

Boring...

This is the first Stephen king book I have ever stopped reading before finishing. It just goes on and on and nothing new happens. Couldn’t get into the characters either.

Loved it. You could not tell who wrote what. The narrator did well with her different accents.

Time well spent listening

EXCELLENT narration! In my personal opinion, not the best of Stephen King, but still a good read. Felt as though the end kind of fizzled out.

meh

Nothing much happened. I'm used to having a very profound response to a King book, but this was quite mundane.

Surprisingly BAD

I have enjoyed most of SK's newer work. He is typically a masterful storyteller and develops characters that you like or sympathise with. This book was something different. It was a struggle to listen to it from the beginning. The narration was great, the premise is great- the characters were awful. I struggled to make it half way through the book before I gave up. No GOOD characters. A few good villains. Maybe he went too hard with his political statement- whatever the case it was NOT an enjoyable book.

disappointed

I love, love, love Stephen King - and have read & listened to many many books. I was impressed initially with the writing.

Story was ok at first - then very confusing...too many characters - only listened to 5 chapters. Narrator was awful - voice not only grated on me, but the up and down (whisper to loud) prompted me to remove the book from my device - I listen while I drive so I was continually adjusting the volume. I will note never to purchase a book narrated by Marin Ireland (and Stephen King himself)

This story is a snooze

I am a big reader of King novels and usually find very satisfying reads. However. I found this story to be uninspired and flat. I struggled to finish it and thought the narrator did well with the material, but it just didn't grab me the way most of his work does. Not sure if it was the collaboration that did it or just a boring story but I will still look forward to the next book.

Political and disappointing

Politics show through in this book. Every male on earth is not a serial abuser, sorry. Not only that, it was tough to get through, very slow. I believe Owen probably wrote most of this book and his father put his name on it for Sales. It was disappointing at best. Narrator was terrible as well.

What a piece of garbage

Stephen King has been my favorite author my entire life. I find it hard to believe he wrote much of this book. I'm about eight hours in and I don't know how much more I can take. It's so boring and the author seems to attempt witty prose every paragraph. Tedious. Junk. The performance isn't very good either. I thought perhaps that was the problem, but no this book has nothing going for it.

What happened to one of my favorite authors?

I've read almost all of Stephen King's books. I was really looking forward to listening to Sleeping Beauties and thought it would be interesting to experience a father/son collaboration. The story got off to a good start. The characters were interesting. It built up some suspense (you just knew something exciting was going to happen!) And then, about 1/3 of the way in, everything started falling apart. The plot seemed to go round and round without going forward--nothing much changed. It went on and on and on...and on. But I kept going with it! Three-fourths of the way in, I was beginning to dislike ALL the characters. (It's good to have at least one to root for, but they were all very forgettable). And so, I have to admit that with 2 hours left to go (out of 25 hours 20 min.), I couldn't take it anymore. I honestly do not know what happened at the end--and I do not care. I did not listen to the end. I'm really sorry to write this kind of review, but this is the first time I've run into a brick wall with a Stephen King novel.

The only thing that saves the audible version of Sleeping Beauties is the performance by Marin Ireland, which is excellent! More than excellent! Well done for the narration!

Terrible choice for narration

I’m a huge Stephen King fan and was very excited for this book with his son, but the story was weak. And whoever thought this poor woman should read this book with the redneck accents was way off!! Made it very hard to enjoy. That was not a story being told, but reading in agony!
