Description

Featuring a conversation with the authors!

In this spectacular father/son collaboration, Stephen King and Owen King tell the highest of high-stakes stories: What might happen if women disappeared from the world of men?

In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: They become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place....

The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease. Is Evie a medical anomaly to be studied? Or is she a demon who must be slain?

Set in a small Appalachian town whose primary employer is a women's prison, Sleeping Beauties is a wildly provocative, gloriously absorbing father/son collaboration between Stephen King and Owen King.

Not bad, not great

It’s a decent book. In the interview at the end Owen and Stephen King state they were going to write this as a tv show - it shows. This reads more like a weekly tv episode then a novel. So so.

Disappointing

I wanted to love this book, after all it's Stephen King! But... I felt like I could tell when he was writing and when his son Owen was writing. It just didn't have the pacing of a typical King book of the genre. It seemed to go off on too many tangents and subplot developments that didn't seem necessary to the story. I found myself getting bored and wishing something, anything, would happen to push the story on but it tended to get bogged down in so many places. I feel like I'm committing sacrilege because I do enjoy so many of Mr. King' s books.... Just not this one.

Boring

Struggled to finish it. Not enough show don't tell. Corny jokes. Redundant
I am a big Stephen King fan. The person reading the book only had a number of voices that she used for multiple characters so it was confusing.

Boring book

The story was boring and the characters were poorly developed. I did not become invested in the characters like I usually do with Stephen King's books. The ending was a disappointment - anti-climatic. Don't waste your time on this book.

Love it, except for one thing!

I LOVE this book I have read through and I am listening to the audio book. The book flows well and is great to listen to if you're a Fan of Mr. King! I have one issue with the book, some may view it as small but I have a hard time getting passed, the issue is, her voice. It's ear piercing and honestly causes me pain when certain words are said. With this being said (written) I really enjoy this novel and recommend it! Maybe just turn the volume down!

Perfect narration!! Great characters. Addictive!

She made the characters so real! The story starts a bit slow, but once it gets going, you need to finish it!

King fans will like it :)

As always, King's work is character-driven and there are many characters that are quite intriguing in this book. Story was pretty good, just not as hard-hitting and captivating as his some of his other gems (i.e. It, 11/22/63, The Shining, etc, etc.) but then King's set the bar extremely high for himself. I was hesitating to download this one but, in the end, I'm glad I did. I really do think it's worth the listen. All in all, if you're a fan of King's work, I think it's a worthy addition to your audio library.

Great Collab by father and son

This audio book had me hooked right from the start. The characters have depth and the story keeps you wondering what will happen next. Would LOVE to see this adapted to a mini series and maybe an alternate ending? Great work by a legend and his son, who shows with his skills in writing that he will be just as amazing as his father!

Boring...

This is the first Stephen king book I have ever stopped reading before finishing. It just goes on and on and nothing new happens. Couldn’t get into the characters either.

May have to quit this one.

I have finished every audio book I've ever started. This one though.... I am done. Story bounces too much and the narrator is getting on my nerves. I am several hours in, but I feel like I've wasted enough time on this one.

Horrible

The worst Stephen King book I have ever heard or read!! I’m a big fan and love his writing. That being said, I think this is by far worst thing He’s ever done. It doesn’t have the story line to support all the political rants. I can look over that if the stories are good enough, but this isn’t that!!!

Sleeping reader

I have read or listened to just about every Stephen King book and unfortunately this one has to go at the bottom of the favorites list.

I found it dragged on way too long in most places and while the premise of the story had promise if felt it got lost down side roads and distractions along the way.

Rather than my usual “don’t want to turn it off” I found myself thinking “I have to get through this and hope it gets better”. It didn’t.

Worst book ever.

I'm not sure if this is the influence of his son or not, but I could not even finish this book. It was a constant man bash from start to finish. There was almost no character development, and the story itself completely lacked content. Save your money, do not get this book.

This Stephen King Fan is Disappointed

What would have made Sleeping Beauties better?

More focus on character development. There were too many stereotypical characters that bored me. Also, twenty-five hours, really - it could have been told in half the time. And the wolf thing - never was explained or maybe it was because I stopped listening after 23 hours. I could sit in the dentist chair another minute.

What aspect of Marin Ireland’s performance would you have changed?

Marin Ireland's performance was good.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Sleeping Beauties?

I would have cut the main characters in half and really focused on a few - Lila, Janette and Evie.

Any additional comments?

I'd be willing to read another collaboration between father and son.

Booooring

I liked the narrator's voice but hated the story. The concept is interesting but what could be a really gripping premise droned on and on and on and on winding up as lame as the characters in it. I never felt suspense. I waited so long for a climax that never came. I was left wondering what the point of the book was anyway.

Horrible

The only scary thing about this book is that it was considered ok by some yes man to print this garbage. It was not funny, not scary, not intriguing or entertaining. It is a bunch of ramble that jumps all over the place with a hundred different character developments. Very disappointing for a King book - he can do better! PASS ON THIS ONE!

The first King novel I have ever really disliked

What would have made Sleeping Beauties better?

The plot of the book was and sounded very promising and intriguing. As soon as I heard about King’s new book “Sleeping Beauties “ and read about it, I couldn’t wait to read it and actually was the first book I preordered on audible. As a huge Stephen King fan, I thought it would be great. However it was also the first time I have ever been extremely disappointed. The characters and their accents were a joke. If this is how King really sees people from the south, well let’s just say he’s never truly gotten to know anyone from here and apparently he thinks we’re all just a bunch of backwoods hillbillies on meth. And as for the story itself started out ok but just rapidly went down hill after the first few chapters. Again the premise of the story was good but it felt like he was just trying to rush to get something down on paper and printed by deadline, if only if he put as much time and effort into the actual story as he did into coming up with the idea for the story. Again I have always been huge fan of his work ever since i was a kid and I have everything he’s ever written, but this is the first novel of his i will not be adding in print to my shelf. And now I’m nervous for first time when it comes to getting his next novel The Outsiders which comes out early next year. If the next one is just as bad i may stop buying his books all together because I think his brain may be faltering with age I don’t know or maybe he’s finally just ran out of good ideas. He had a good run while it lasted but I guess all good things must come to an end eventually. I really hope he restores my faith with his next one because im not ready to give up entirely just yet.

What was most disappointing about Stephen King and Owen King ’s story?

The entire book sadly

How could the performance have been better?

Honestly not the narrators fault, you can only do so much with what your given

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment

Any additional comments?

I say if you want to,give it a try. you can always return it if you don’t like it I suppose

Man bashing for 25 hours...

Let me preface this review by saying that I believe in equality for all sexes, races, nationalities, and sexual orientations. But this book was ridiculously over the top when it comes to man bashing. Every plot and twist revolves around how poorly men treat women.

Let’s just say that if Stephen King’s name wasn’t on this book, I doubt it would have been so popular on its own merits. If this is a sign of Owen King’s future writing, I’ll definitely be passing.
