Story
Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place that might sound and smell very much like our own, but which looks completely different. Particularly as it’s carried though space on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown). It plays by different rules. But then, some things are the same everywhere. The Disc’s very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the world’s first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land.

Publisher's Summary
Ever since she was a tiny child, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the random power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who won't stay dead. But now her father, the Mage Abhorsen, is missing, and to find him Sabriel must cross back into that world.
Though her journey begins alone, she soon finds companions: Mogget, whose seemingly harmless feline form hides a powerful and perhaps malevolent spirit; and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage long imprisoned by magic, now free in body but still trapped by painful memories.
With threats on all sides and only each other to trust, the three must travel deep into the Old Kingdom, toward a battle that will pit them against the true forces of life and death, and bring Sabriel face-to-face with her own hidden destiny.
A tale of dark secrets, deep love and dangerous magic, Sabriel introduces Garth Nix as an exceptional new talent.
What the critics say
"It's an epic journey in a world as richly realized as Middle-earth and much darker and bloodier than Harry's trials at Hogwarts...Tim Curry brings authority to the reading, grounding the fantastic elements with nuance of character and depth of emotion. (AudioFile)
"Rich, complex, involving, hard to put down, this first novel...is excellent high fantasy." (Publishers Weekly)
"A page-turner for sure." (Booklist)

Delectable read, well crafted tale.
Nix's intriguing world is brought to charactered life by the passion and skill of a great story teller. Curry is loving every minute of it. Recording quality is a little crackly at times, almost as if played on a gramaphone.

Unique Fantasy Story
It seemed to glaze over some things a bit quickly but ultimately was a very interesting and seemingly unique approach to a genre that is pretty overdone these days. I read it when I was younger and am glad I came back to listen again now.

A favourite, done justice
I have read this book many times, and so I was excited to see that it was available and narrated by Tim Curry, who did a fantastic job. I thoroughly enjoyed enjoyed the retelling, and truly feel like this classic was done justice. It felt like reading for the first time!

YA that's enjoyable for all ages
I was a bit sceptical when an online friend told me I simply must read this young adult novel, but about half way through I bought the next book in the series so I could start into that as soon as I was done this one.
Good pacing, realistic romance, charming characters, and just enough power-creap that it feels like character growth instead of systematic ramping-up.
I'd recommend this for anyone who wants a light read.
and, of course, Tim Curry is a treasure and a great to listen too.
