WOW

i was told by my therapist to read this book as she believes I am ADHD. In the same breath she also explained that because of that i won't be ABLE to read it. So, i downloaded it and listened while I'm driving. i couldn't even sit still to listen to it at home. Too distracted :( I feel like someone understands me and how my mind works now. Huge relief, but i know the road to wellness is going to be long. Thankfully, I'm on the right path... i hope

Hippie-dippie nonsense

Started out ok, but the author starts throwing out a lot of bold claims with no real evidence. The author rarely tries to examine alternate hypotheses that fit the facts he is looking at.

His idea that the cause of ADHD kids not having sufficient emotional connection with their parents is a little too vague, and un-falsifiable. If this were 100% of the story, everyone has something in their childhood that could be pointed at that 'explains' ADHD (even those without it). Also his prescription for avoiding ADHD, would not be anything like the parenting style that people employed before ADHD rates started to spike.

He claims that 'spanking' and 'timeouts' essentially traumatize a child into being ADHD... ok... so we should have seen ADHD rates WAAAAAYYYYYYYY higher 70 years ago then we do today.... right...

The author also attributes a child's (emotional) sensitivity as the reason why some kids end up with ADHD more easily, and why there is the appearance of a genetic basis. If this were the case, why do way more boys have ADHD than girls?

This is a bunch of hippie dippie, laissez faire parenting, nonsense.

Extremely Informative

Dr Mate help me understand that there is a marked difference between ADD and ADHD. I had previously thought that they were one and the same. However, I now realize that hyperactivity is not always concurrent with Attention Deficit. Through Dr Mate's book I realize that someone who is introverted and quiet can still have a racing mind without having a frantic body.

Snake Oil

Dr. Maté takes the blanket approach that all mental ills are caused by childhood trauma. It is the opposite stance of hardline genetic determinism. It's not useful to think things are purely nature or purely nurture. He offers no proof of his views, or proof of their efficacy. He has no published papers on ADHD and does no research on the topic. This book is heavy on opinion and light on facts. And any fact that is presented is overstated, or used as some kind of bait and switch to make a broader point that the data does not say, all while contradicting all of the new discoveries being made about ADHD.

He makes broad claims about neurology despite not being an expert in that field.

The final most harmful implication of his beliefs is that if your child has a mental illness or impairment, then it is solely the parent's fault.

These views have been thoroughly debunked as our understanding of this disorder has grown.

If you are looking for a book that is full of empathy and understanding for the plight of people with ADHD, in my opinion people are better off checking out Dr. Edward Hallowell's work. If you want more facts check out Dr. Russell Barkley's work.

Don't waste your time with this.

Must read for ADD adults, parents, teachers, ....

This book has been extremely helpful in my own understanding of my own adult diagnosis of ADHD at the age of 37 as well as providing an increased understanding of my step daughter's recent diagnosis of ADHD. With greater understanding of my own behaviours and through processes, and strategies to help work through them to grow my extremely sensitive and underdeveloped emotions, I can also begin to allow myself greater self compassion. Like it or not, my partner too has learned and benefited from this book in her own self awareness, and gaining strategies on how to manage and help improve our daughter's emotional developement concurrent with medications that as a 12yr old, she has recognized the benefits her medication has brought, particularly in school performance, as well as socially and giving her the energy and confidence to join her school soccer and volleyball teams!

Excellent book

Excellent, well-written book that covers a lot of ground, including a role of attachment and presents ADD a lot as an attachment disorder, which I find helpful, but others may argue for distinguishing them, which, in fact is often hard to do and this book does a good job at integrating rather then distinguishing the two disorders. On the whole this is a well-balanced book when it comes to bio-psycho-social-spiritual formulation. I truly enjoyed Daniel Mate’s voice and narration, one of the best l have heard on Audible books. Unfortunately, some of the Audible books are narrated by jarring, unpleasant voices that my ADD brain absolutely cannot stand even when I'm genuinely interested in the book itself. Daniel’s voice did a true service to this beautifully written book.

Life changing!!!!

Didn't know that my mother's rageuos beatings caused me this much damage. But why would i suspect that?, such beatings are the gold standard of parenting in Africa. Its sad i discovered this now, imagine if i dicovered this in my earlier years, instead of in my final year of university, at the same time i feel lucky to have discovered this at 21. I have seen first hand how bad adhd can be if it goes untreated. My father was a great lawyer at his peak, he is an absolute mess right now because of this. Lost job, marriage, back with his mother, multiple kids, crippling debts, lost car to pawnshop after years of paying for it. I will try to recommend this book for him and i hope my future wont be the same. Time to start the process of healing.

Excellent book. Really gets you to understand how ADD originates, works and feels

This book has helped me understand how ADD affects my life, my husband’s and my 11 year old daughter. I feel now that I can be much more effective when dealing with everyday issues in relation with my family and with myself. Also to be able to be self compassionate and be compassionate with them rather than judgemental.

Age 24, I discover my ADHD thanks to this book.

This is a wonderful read, and a turning point in my life.

Learning this has been a great relief, and is making me hopeful about the future. The narration too helped to bring life to the experiences of sufferers related in the book.

Accepting your flaws is difficult when you don't even understand what exactly you're supposed to accept. Now I do, and I also know how to ask others to accept me, I know in what ways I am different from them, and in what ways my behavior will appear unpredictable and irrational.

Very helpful for people who want I understand not only ADD, but themselves.

I found this book extremely helpful in understanding where many of my deep seated self defeating issues and habits have come from. With that understanding Dr Maté them guided me through an understanding of how to mature that part of me.

Highly recommend
