Description

Watch for the signs! What signs these shall be, I say unto you: first the earth will flow with the blood of Aen Seidhe, the Blood of Elves....

For over a century, humans, dwarves, gnomes, and elves have lived together in relative peace. But times have changed, the uneasy peace is over, and now the races are fighting once again. The only good elf, it seems, is a dead elf.

Geralt of Rivia, the cunning assassin known as The Witcher, has been waiting for the birth of a prophesied child. This child has the power to change the world - for good, or for evil.

As the threat of war hangs over the land and the child is hunted for her extraordinary powers, it will become Geralt's responsibility to protect them all - and the Witcher never accepts defeat.

Following The Last Wish, Blood of Elves is the new novel starring Geralt of Rivia, the inspiration for the critically acclaimed videogame The Witcher.

Cant stand the narrator

I wish I listened to the preview before purchasing. Tried 3 times but never made it past 10 minutes. The book could be a couple hours longer if he wasn't talking a mile a minute with a weird Shatner-esque speech

Not for me

I've wanted to play the games for a while, and I enjoyed the Netflix series - albeit a little confusing. If I watch a film-adaptation I always go into the book with an open mind. I have a little more than two hours left and it's mainly been dialogue and character development. I have found it very dry. In fact, I venture that I would have been able to listen to the first few chapters and then skip to the last few chapters without missing anything meaningful. It doesn't help that the narrator has that annoying habit of constantly interpreting dialogue as anger or derision - this indicates inexperience to me. When he isn't shouting, he does have a broken way of voice acting which is a little reminiscent of Shatner, like another reviewer pointed out.

This is the type of book to listen to while doing something moderately taxing - you don't have to concentrate very hard or for very long to get the gist of things. I'll try the second book in the series and hope for anything to propel the plot in an exciting way - if not: Returned.

Update: I returned the sequel after an hour. Sorry. This is a 👎🏻 series for me.

Good book even for s mature listener

I have noticed a bunch of fantasy novels lately that seem to cater to young teens. It is harder to find a story thats a little rougher around the edges a little sex, a little "real foul language", a little more descriptive battle scenes.... this story is closer to the mark.
It still has a bit of the teenage growing up problems but not so nauseating. The story is shaping up. I am looking forward to the next one.

Could not stand the narrator.

I found this really hard to listen to. I'm a big fan of Witcher 3, and the Netflix Series just sparked interest so I thought I'd try the books and dive deeper into the Witcher world. Instead I found the book very slow and the narrator very annoying. I dragged myself through the entirety in hopes it would improve, and I must say there was a chapter with Ceri and Yen that I didn't mind - maybe I was numb to the narrator by then and could appreciate the story - but in the end I was completely turned off of the books and will take some time before it try another of the series.

Good, but a product of it's time.

I first got into this universe with the Witcher 3, like most people. But I decided since I didn't want spoilers, and I wanted to actually know what was going on, I'd read the books first. So I tried them, and while they're good, the series is a product of the times. The book gaslights you, the style is bland, and the narrator conveys no emotion. That's fine, but in the book itself nothing... happens. Like the most interesting thing to occur is an alley fight and even then Geralt just kills them all and moves on. I get that this series has a large following, but thank god for the Netflix series, or I would've stopped with this all together.

gave up half way through.

never played the game, heard the story was great so I thought I'd give it a try. listened to half the book waiting for something to happen. waiting for it to get interesting. it was all character development, which I like but half way through the book I don't care at all about any of the characters. I realized I had been listening for a half an hour, and had no idea what was going on. this doesn't happen often with me and audiobooks, but when I'm riding the bus home from work and the bus ride is more entertaining than the story.......

credit where credit is due, the narrator does a really good job with the voices and narration performance. but at the end of the day I was bored enough to stop half way through.

Character development at its finest

Story jumps around a bit but that is a personal complaint. It's just a little harder to reread paragraphs or pages when on an audiobook and in this book, information and clues are dropped everywhere.

Worth listening to

I absolutely enjoyed the story and the narrators ability to make each voice sound unique and distinct. The story is mostly character development for Ciri and very anti-climactic but no less important or enjoyable. There is an issue with the narration, however. The reviews complaining about the narration being too fast and Shatneresk are very accurate, but if you slow down the narration speed to about 0.80 - 0.85 it fixes that issue and makes it worth listening too. I imagen that will have to be done for all the books unless it was a recording speed issue on techs part. I can't imagen a person can really read aloud that fast.

Great book, just one little issue

The book was great and the narrator was almost perfect except for one thing, his pronounciation of the name Dandelion which he pronounced Dan-dill-eon. This is only an issue because it is a different pronounciation then in the first book.

Enjoyable start to a gritty, fantasy world!

Full disclosure: I have played Witcher 3, so I was familiar with the main characters, events, and places, and went in expecting to learn more about character backstories and lore, which this book definitely provides. For the uninitiated, it is challenging with each chapter introducing you to a dizzying array of place and character names to keep track of, and I get why some could be dissuaded.

However, you are in effect a visitor to a whole new world, so it is unsurprising to feel lost at times. In fact, the experience is _very much_ like playing the game in this regard as you're traveling through unfamiliar places and trying to make sense of the relationships and politics of each, friends, foes, etc. As you progress and build your knowledge, and it gets deeper and more enjoyable. Don't give up after this volume - keep going!

A word on the narration: I find Kenny's interpretations and voices enhance the story and help to keep track of characters. For a bit of fun, and to approximate the video game, pull up The Witcher 3 soundtrack on Spotify and play at low volume in the background.
