Description

Lifelong friends, they went their separate ways. Now they are together again, though each holds secrets from the others in his heart. They speak of a world shadowed with rumors of war. They speak of tales of strange monsters, creatures of myth, creatures of legend. They do not speak of their secrets. Not then. Not until a chance encounter with a beautiful, sorrowful woman, who bears a magical crystal staff, draws the companions deeper into the shadows, forever changing their lives and shaping the fate of the world.

No one expected them to be heroes.

Least of all, them.

Poor Narration But Great Story

The narrator sounds like a robot and is impossible to listen to on normal speed. Strange emphasis on unnecessary words. The book however is a great read and I would love to get the next in the saga but am reluctant to listen to the same narrator.

Robot voice

Great story that I’ve read several times but the narration is just so choppy and robot like. I couldn’t even finish and returned the audio book for a refund. I am so terribly disappointed, this is one of my favourite fantasy series.

Terrible narration

I have loved the dragon lance series since I was a child. I have read them several times so when I had some audible credits to spare I figured why not? It would be good to hear the stories again as I completed a long road trip.
I have not been so disappointed by an audible title. The reading is so bad I would compare it listening to an automated script reader or perhaps a grade 2 child reading.
The pauses and pronunciation the narrator has are so distracting it is hard to follow the story. The pace is all wrong. Mid sentence sounds like he is starting a new sentence, dialogue becomes confusing. It’s awful. I wish I would have listened to the sample prior to getting a bunch of the series and will certainly never get another book with this narrator.
Not sure how someone who reads so terrible landed the job...

Good start, but falls short later

In the first half of the book the narration was decent, but in the second half, it sounds almost like the narrator was no longer happy to do the reading. Nonetheless it is good to see a recording of a popular classic.

Narrator is terrible

This narrator is so terrible making the story impossible to follow. He emphasises the wrong words and pauses when he shouldn't. Didn't make it through the first chapter. Very disappointed.

A Beloved Story That Endures Rather Well

I've been a fan of the Dragonlance novels for years, though less so in my adulthood than I was as a teenager. The world of Krynn is expansive, intriguing, and well-developed by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, and this is where it all began. It's well worth a purchase! Mr. Boehmer does excellent work as a narrator, adopting unique and interesting voices for the characters. My only small criticism of his work here is his pronunciation of certain names and words, in particular 'draconian', which he pronounces as 'DRAY-conian'. I would normally ignore that, but given how often the word appears, it never stops being a little bit jarring. That small nitpick aside, I would recommend this reading to any fan of the books, or to anyone looking to explore a new and spellbinding world.

Paul Boehmer is by far the worst narrator.

Paul Boehmer is by far the worst narrator any story has ever had the misfortune of being told by. He seems to feel the need to add pauses in places where no commas or periods are in the text. His accents for the characters make no sense. This man is continually changing his pronunciation of names and places. It is an amazing book and deserves a better reader. If i was Margaret Weis, I would be sorely disappointed to have Paul Boehmer ruining my work with his half assed attempt at narration.

Still good 30 years later

I first read Dragons of Autumn Twilight when I was twelve years old and instantly fell in love with the series. I read most of the Dragonlance books in the 1980s to mid 1990s catalogue until I felt I had outgrown the genre. Years later I picked up reading fantasy again, now populated with edgy anti-heroes and "gritty realism", and though I like some of new books I found myself increasingly drawn back to the fantasies I was first introduced to. So out of curiosity I checked Audible and was happy to see it was available and have decided to write a review for the #Audible1 contest.

Fantasy writing has improved greatly since the 1980s. There are many things one could criticize about this book. The writing is not the highest quality - it was based on D&D sessions and at times it shows (especially if you played D&D and recognize the conventions shining through) and it was their first novel. It is derivative of Tolkien, the premise is not overly strong, and some of the characters are either flat or downright stereotypical, and the female characters can be cringe worthy at times especially by this decade's standards. Nonetheless, despite all the myriad flaws I love the story. Undoubtedly some of that is nostalgia but I think it more than just that. One can tell that Weis & Hickman have a love for the fantasy genre, for the story, for the world they helped build, for the characters and the places that they describe. It is hard not to be drawn in by that passion.

And there is one thing I respect about this story - its unapologetic religious themes. They aren't afraid to show characters of faith or motivated by their faith or describing their faith. They aren't afraid to show characters that use religions as a means to power or as a crutch either. Some of the characters ask the difficult questions to people of faith and of the gods themselves. Is it a deep examination of spiritual issues? No, but it is an integral part of the story and the lives of the characters that many authors and/or publishers, I suspect sometimes just because they are afraid of alienating their audience, edit out.

The narration is good. Others have pointed out, and I agree, that sometimes he can pause for too long or pause in the wrong places. His high pitched Tasselhoff could pierce my brain sometimes and I found his delivery of Tika at the beginning of Book 2 distracting. Without spoiling anything she is very upset, understandably so, but the off putting delivery distracted from the emotional impact the scene should have had. Overall though I thought the narrator was good.

I'm glad I purchased this book and revisited the story after all these years. It still has the power to draw me in and I would recommend it to any Dragonlance fan and any fantasy fan.

Great book, but the narrator.. ...:(

Good book, but the Narrator's pronunciation detracts fro ma great story.
Pal-a - deen
vs
Pal-a-dine
I don't eat food at a Deener, i eat it at a diner.
his pronunciation of Draconians messed me up also..
I am surprised he pronounced Sturm correctly...
Anyway it bothers me, and doesn't let you get into the flow of the book..
Almost as bad as the Animated movie, but at least they pronounced the words correctly lol.

Definitely not worth spending more than the cost of one credit on.
unless you are desperate.
but the story is great still, just fine an different narrator.

Awful Narration

Enjoyed reading the book but the narrator made the story almost unbearable for me. Won't be downloading more by this narrator.
