Great entry to the series or as extra story
I read this book long after I had started the wheel of time series and I think it’s amazing. It answered so many questions for me and gave me a more in-depth story behind one of my favourite characters.

Less than expected
If you were expecting a book in which has the same scope of multiple characters, telling a thrilling and epic story, you will only be mildly disappointed.
The book set out and did it’s job, as it is a prequel to the series, setting up how the mentor characters Lan, and Moraine met.
Though I must confess I was expecting Tam Althor, I was expecting rands mother, I was expecting some chapters focusing on the aiel war, with the death of the king of carhieon, battles, and the like.
What we got was accepted Moraine, and Swan, becoming Aes Sadi, some bland white tower politics, the search for the dragon, a little bit of Lan, then finally a showdown with some dark friends.
In all honesty I was expecting the last chapter, or the epilogue to be the dragons birth.
Overall it was good but I feel like it could have been more.

Not as good as a mainline entry
For reference, I listened to this after finishing Fires of Heaven (book 5). New Spring is a novella and a prequel to the wheel of time, although I do not recommend reading prior to Eye of the World. I found the story to be lacking considerably. No real payoffs, very little excitement, just sort of meh. However it does give some interesting backstory to some favourite characters.
The story is mainly about Moraine and Siuan Sanche (not 100% on spelling) as well as Lan. I find that since Kate Reading does the majority of the narration here that it detracts from the characters a little bit. Listening to the POVs in this book reminds me heavily of Nynaeve POVs in the mainline books. I just thought that their characters were a little more different than that. I think that the story suffers because of Reading's narration (when normally it's fine). I can say that Michael Kramer's parts are still fantastic and even his portrayal or Moraine is preferable to me than Reading's....just seemed very jarring.
Overall you can skip this story unless you are a completionist. Although here's to hoping that I'm going to have some mega revelation that ties in with New Spring later on in the main story entries.
