Description

The adventures of an American hacker in Medieval England continue as Martin Banks takes his next step on the journey toward mastering his reality-altering powers and fulfilling his destiny.

A month has passed since Martin helped to defeat the evil programmer Jimmy, and things couldn’t be going better. Except for his love life, that is. Feeling distant and lost, Gwen has journeyed to Atlantis, a tolerant and benevolent kingdom governed by the Sorceresses, and a place known to be a safe haven to all female time-travelers.

Thankfully, Martin and Philip are invited to a summit in Atlantis for all of the leaders of the time-traveler colonies, and now Martin thinks this will be a chance to try again with Gwen. Of course, this is Martin Banks we’re talking about, so murder, mystery, and high intrigue all get in the way of a guy who just wants one more shot to get the girl.

The follow-up to the hilarious Off to Be the Wizard, Scott Meyer’s Spell or High Water proves that no matter what powers you have over time and space, you can’t control rotten luck.

Solid follow-up book, amazing narration once again

Another hilarious Magic 2.0 book from Scott Meyer and the best narrator ever, Luke Daniels! What a great romp through the nerdy, geeky, ridiculously implausible world of 20th/21st Century computer hackers-come-medieval wizards.

This time round Martin and Philip are in Atlantis, summoned by a mysterious bowl and reunited with Gwen only to discover a strange time-loop double character (conveniently: Britt the Younger and Britt the Elder) that throws the theories of time and timelines out the window and the even more mysterious plot to kill one (or both?) of them! Oh, and Jimmy/Merlin is making his return to Medieval England while the two are away.

Comparing books 1 and 2 of this series, I'd have to say book 1 was perhaps a bit more novel and had all the fun stuff that comes with time travel, computer nerds, and people posing as wizards. The battle at the end was great, the magic spell creations were funny, and the Martin the Apprentice/Philip the Teacher relationship was spot on. The second book may lack a bit of the plot sturdiness, but is possibly a bit funnier (Ampix was hilarious) and the narration is even better (is that even possible?!).

I think the increased role of the two federal agents made the book a solid performance from Meyer, but the attempt at keeping two/three stories going at the same time (1: Atlantis, and then 2.a: Jimmy in the 21st century with the agents followed by 2.b: his return to England) left the murder plot a bit weak. The fact that there were two Britts, the timey-ness around that possibility, and the relationships between Philip/Britt the younger and Martin/Gwen a bit forced. But then again, not really expecting high quality dramatic fiction here, and it did exactly what I hoped for in the end!

Light and funny!

Great entertainment. Light and funny. Excellent narrator; he’s phenomenal at the voices as they are all unique and seem suitable to the right characters

I don't like the use of time.

It's terrible and ruins the work done. There is no suspense because of the time baby effect and heavy lean into causality. What the point in a murder plot story if the you have a character who is the physical embodiment of plot armour. This was less scfi- fantasy and more romance for nerdy romance sake. Speaking of romance, the important bit don't even happen in the story. They're retold as time travel memory, which is lazy.

I hate the 3 characters as 1 problem. Whish is a problem for me because I love all your work on side character in this book. The different societies of magic users and setting are interesting. But this forced romance Disney romance between the main characters is cringey at the best of times.

The whole book gives me filler vibes. Like it was hastily built bridge between 1st to 2nd books. Stakes don't mean anything, when you know everything is going to fine. And as long as those 2-4 characters exist, nothing of consequence happens in the future.

next classic series

most likely will be the next big name in humorous sci Fi/phantasy genre on the same level as the Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy

Really fun and always engaging

I stumbled on this series after finishing Ready Player One (also highly recommended) in search of something similar. Though not entirely the same, it was a hit and I fell in love with this story and it's characters immediately. Daniels' narration style is great as well - even while multi-tasking (I listen while I work) he keeps me engaged to the point it often feels like I'm watching a movie. I've just finished Book 2 and intend on completing the series. Credits well spent! #Audible1

Building on a Great Premise

Book 2 is so delightful. Entering a new nerdy world while a menace circles around in the background. I found it thoroughly entertaining and I look forward to continuing the series. #Audible1

A good story ruined by weak characters

The plot had an intriguing who-dunnit that kept me interested throughout the entire story. It's too bad the bad guys ended up being incompetent boobs who came off more like a couple of insecure high school kids than anything actually devious. I still enjoyed listening about the world of Atlantis, and the Jimmy arc was fun as well. I'm definitely looking forward to book 3.
