Description

The first sleep book by a leading scientific expert - Professor Matthew Walker, director of UC Berkeley's Sleep and Neuroimaging Lab - reveals his groundbreaking exploration of sleep, explaining how we can harness its transformative power to change our lives for the better.

Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

But an explosion of scientific discoveries in the last 20 years has shed new light on this fundamental aspect of our lives. Now, preeminent neuroscientist and sleep expert Matthew Walker gives us a new understanding of the vital importance of sleep and dreaming. Among so many other things, within the brain, sleep enriches our ability to learn, memorize, and make logical decisions. It recalibrates our emotions, restocks our immune system, fine-tunes our metabolism, and regulates our appetite. Dreaming mollifies painful memories and creates a virtual reality space in which the brain melds past and present knowledge to inspire creativity.

Walker answers important questions about sleep: How do caffeine and alcohol affect sleep? What really happens during REM sleep? Why do our sleep patterns change across a lifetime? How do common sleep aids affect us, and can they do long-term damage? Charting cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs and synthesizing decades of research and clinical practice, Walker explains how we can harness sleep to improve learning, mood, and energy levels; regulate hormones; prevent cancer, Alzheimer's, and diabetes; slow the effects of aging; increase longevity; enhance the education and lifespan of our children, and boost the efficiency, success, and productivity of our businesses. Clear-eyed, fascinating, and immensely accessible, Why We Sleep is the crucial account on sleep that will forever change listeners' minds on the subject.

Would be better as a physical book

I had high hopes for this book. I do believe that in this case the physical book in your hand would have been better. It is informative and you don’t need to listen to chapters in order. However, that being the case it is difficult to go back and reference something from another chapter. This should be treated as more of a text book/ reference book not as easy listening

Terrific content, terrible narration

This book is on my “recommended for EVERYONE to read” list now. It gives compelling (and terrifying) analysis into the importance of sleep and its effects on pretty much all aspects of life. The deep dives into both the science of sleep (including dreams) plus its ramifications for everyday life and long-term health have radically altered my view on the critical nature of that 8 hours of nightly rest.

However, while the content of the book and Dr Walker’s research is tremendous, the narration on this audiobook truly does it a disservice. The narrator sounds only a notch better than a robot, with minimal dynamics and such a dull delivery as to make me think Steve West was ironically and severely lacking in sleep whilst recording.

Do yourself a favour: skip the audiobook and get a paper or Kindle copy! Without the poor narration, this would have been a 5-star review.

Neat facts and great advice for better sleep

Very interesting book detailing the importance of sleep. There are many neat facts about the different sleep stages, and how these relate to daily performance, memory recollection, emotions, disease and more. The author has great analogies to help make some of the more technical aspects understandable. I've made a few very simple lifestyle changes as recommended in this book to improve my sleep. Well worth the listen.

I'm telling everyone about this book!

This book blew open the door in my world on the benefits of sleep and the detriments of too little sleep. I knew of the importance of sleep but had no idea what far reaching consequence the lack of sleep can have on every system in the body. I changed my sleep habits immediately upon reading how detrimental it is to not sleep long enough. Improve every aspect of your life by getting enough shut-eye.

Great info slowly

Great info. I wish he had more details on melatonin as I’ve seen other research on it but all of the other details are fascinating. Especially the ideas behind dreaming.

However the narrator is slow. I listened to it at least 1.25 speed and sounded close to normal.

The importance of sleep is deeper than I thought.

Value your sleep. A very cautionary outlook on sleep deficit. Seems very credible and has made me much more aware of getting the sleep I need in my life.

How to get to sleep easier and much more!

The book is an amazing breakdown of the benefits of sleep and motivates the reader to take some steps to improve their sleep quality.

Sleep is ignored in our society, it’s amazing how few people and companies still live by the mantra that quantity of time awake and working is better than quality.

The book gives some easy to follow tips to get to sleep easier. Amazing how effective something as simple as if you can’t fall asleep then get up and do something quietly and avoiding any LED lights works, try sleeping again 15 mins later.

Lots of info on how sleep heals the body and is one of the best medicines out there, and free!

A lot more, you’ll like this book!
