Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In the final book in The Iron Druid Chronicles, two-thousand-year-old Druid Atticus O’Sullivan confronts the Norse gods Loki and Hel to stop the impending apocalypse, while Granuaile and Owen work to secure the future of Druidry.

“[Kevin] Hearne draws his Iron Druid Chronicles to a pitch-perfect close in this dizzy, world-hopping adventure. But amidst the battles and bargaining that go into saving the world, there is also an enormous amount of heart.”—
RT Book Reviews

Unchained from fate, the Norse gods Loki and Hel are ready to unleash Ragnarok, a.k.a. the Apocalypse, upon the earth. They’ve made allies on the darker side of many pantheons, and there’s a globe-spanning battle brewing that ancient Druid Atticus O’Sullivan will be hardpressed to survive, much less win.

Granuaile MacTiernan must join immortals Sun Wukong and Erlang Shen in a fight against the Yama Kings in Taiwan, and she discovers that the stakes are much higher than she thought.

Meanwhile, Archdruid Owen Kennedy must put out both literal and metaphorical fires from Bavaria to Peru to keep the world safe for his apprentices and the future of Druidry.

And Atticus recruits the aid of a tyromancer, an Indian witch, and a trickster god in hopes that they’ll give him just enough leverage to both save Gaia and see another sunrise. There is a hound named Oberon who deserves a snack, after all.

Ce que les critiques en disent

“[Kevin] Hearne is a terrific storyteller with a great snarky wit. . . . Neil Gaiman’s American Gods meets Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden.”SFFWorld

“[The Iron Druid books] are clever, fast-paced and a good escape.”Boing Boing

“Hearne understands the two main necessities of good fantasy stories: for all the wisecracks and action, he never loses sight of delivering a sense of wonder to his readers, and he understands that magic use always comes with a price. Highly recommended.”The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction

Immeasurable Disappointment

Ok, so first and foremost Luke did a fantastic job so in no way do I have an issue with his work here. Hearne however, while I enjoyed his work for the most part this finale was awful. I digested it for days like somebody going through the stages of grief, only to come out the other end wondering how and why? It's never easy to end a series but damn, not since Skyler from Breaking Bad have I come to despise a character as much as Granuaile. I mean, I find myself thinking of other (better) characters like Molly from the Dresden books. She had a quite a journey, and one that is still developing; and guess what despite everything she didn't become an insufferable self righteous harpy. Look, I still like the series overall but this is far FAR from his best work. This isn't a grand finale, it's a weirdly forcedly woke at times wet fart that left me in foul spirits. I don't do reviews normally, so forgive my bluntness.

Good but not great like the rest

First off I loved all the other books in this series. This book just didn’t have the feeling of adventure that the rest did. Right from the start it was all about summing up the rest of the books and ending the story. Like most good stories the payoff/ending is always a bit of a let down.

Weak ending to a great series

This final book seems a sad way to end a great series. First, the book feels a bit like it’s going through the motions to get the thing over with. It just feels a bit wooden. Second, can’t say I love the outcome. It feels a bit PC and the moral seems to be that Atticus should have stayed selfish and never tried to help anyone. The morals don’t resonate given how the story evolved and leave the reader frustrated. Luke Danials gives a solid performance but seems to have decided to change impressions of several characters for some reason.

A Mixed Ending...

I will precursor this by saying I will keep this spoiler free and focus entirely on the feeling/writing construction. That being said...

I love this series and it is definitely in my top three of all time for novel series I enjoy. I would still recommend it to anyone, despite what I am about to say about this novel in particular. So bare with me.

This latest installment was a bit of a letdown for me. I expected an epic ending, full of emotion, anger, hurt, grief but with some hope too. I did get some epic and most of the rest... but the novel was a lot of detours, inconsequential sections that made it hard to care about certain characters, or certain scenarios, and I got an overall feeling of it deconstructing all that has been established, built, and assumed to be true in the previous books. There were moments of great emotion but unfortunately there were far more moments of frustration that pulled me out of the story. These moments were because I felt the characters behaved out-of-character for what they have been established to be in the previous novels. I don't like when a series builds characters and then turns around and gives me something else. Unfortunately this novel does that.

So all that being said, this series is still phenomenal and well worth the read. The writing style alone makes it worth it, but the characters, humour and atmosphere are all worthy of every moment of time put into devouring the story. Luke Daniels adds his voice to it here on audible, and as far as I am concerned, I will always hear his voice as that of Atticus. He really does immerse the listener in the story. I hope everyone gets a chance to go through this tale with Atticus, Granuaile, and Owen.

Love this series!

Kevin Hearne finishes this series as strongly as he began it. I was hooked from the first book to the last. The story keeps you hooked throughout the entire book, I couldn't put it on pause! Luke Daniels is such a great narrator that he made the book sound like it was written specifically for him to read! Highly recommend this series! #Audible1

Great narration, "meh" finish.

I think I stopped caring around book 7....but I felt like finishing as I'm on vacation and had the time to spare. I started out enjoying the series, but I found Granuaile to be immature and unlikeable and the hounds annoying and unamusing.

I don't feel like the author did a good job in grasping the mindset of someone as ancient as the main character would be. I understand that's a tall order for anyone to accomplish, but perhaps Hearne hasn't studied much of the old wisdom he seems to know so much about (ie finishing on book 9 and always ending with chapter 27). The main character, on the other hand, would have studied and lived it... And for his character to be immature, apologetic and unsure of himself is very much out of character.

Lastly, humans are meant to be the caretakers of the earth... But we are not a "cancer", as Granuaile and others seem to believe. Atticus would have lived through the truth of the matter, which the data also supports: http://www.populartechnology.net/2009/10/peer-reviewed-papers-supporting.html?m=1

All in all, I say goodbye to this series by drowning this book and burying it certain fathoms in the earth, And deeper than did ever plummet sound.

meh

I found it hard to care about the characters. I guess the series is played out. For an epic fight it was pretty dull. I liked the ending though.
