Description

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of Scottish born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess, and is renowned for his skillful use of deductive reasoning (somewhat mistakenly - see inductive reasoning) and astute observation to solve difficult cases. He is arguably the most famous fictional detective.

Truly wonderful classic.

Loved listening to someone reading and expressing the story I have not read it since my school days. I hope there are more generations to come who can enjoy great stories like these classics. #Audible1

Good stories, terrible narrators.

Sean Murphy is the only listed narrator, however there must be at least 5. Three of the narrators are female two of which are terrible. The first story's narrator is good but I had to stop 10 minutes into the second story. If you can get past the awful narration the stories are great.

This is not the audiobook you're looking for.

This collection isn't read by a single narrator. There is significant variety of performance skill and recording quality to be found from story to story throughout. Sometimes the experience is wonderful and rich. An hour later, it may be intolerable-- with poor pronunciation, wooden character performance, terrible phrasing, evident lack of comprehension, and an utter absence of prosody. (One of the narrators is so remarkably bad both technically and artistically, I almost could not bear to continue. I did so, but not with much enjoyment.)

Older audio books can sometimes be lower in quality than the polished products we now expect. This collection is made of such older recordings (re-purposed more than once it seems -- the Audible section headings are read in German), and clearly intended for the discount rack. It simply does not properly respect either its listeners or the source material. Anyone who loved Sherlock Holmes would not have treated these classic stories with such blatant disregard.

What a scam!

I thought I was getting a great deal on this massive collection. Then I discovered that this is actually just a copy of public domain audiobooks done by volunteers from LibriVox! What's worse is this 'Oregon Publishing' has made up the names of the narrators for the books they 'borrow' from LibriVox. For instance - this collection indicates it is narrated by a single person - Sean Murphy. In fact, it's a bunch of different narrators - none of whom are named 'Sean Murphy'.

Even if this is legal (which I'm not sure of) - it's just plain rude to take away a volunteer's credit. I wouldn't mind so much if they clearly indicated the source and properly gave credit where it's due. Making up names of narrators however makes it seem like this is just a cash grab.

A female Watson??? (aka "Bewitched, Bothered &

Bewildered Am I") No clarification on the single (?) attempt to make Watson a woman...made more difficult to do, given the "background" info given (that Watson was wounded in Aghanistan) and was retired from the military. (Was this a "test drive" of a female partner at an age that would consider co-habitation between a single, unmarried male and single unmarried female TOTALLY unacceptable and so was dropped from both 221B - AND - as an alternative to the male "Watson"????) Inquiring mind wants to know! Elsewise, a commendable (though poorly timed/presented) effort!

Addendum: IF the narrator of ALL OF Part 5 into and including about half of Part 6 is still using her sing-song / VERY OFF-PUTTING NARRATION -- or is still employed as a "narrator" (this IS a dated book) PLEASE find her an alternate position! Do NOT have her do more narration - her narration is an offense to - and a trial for - listeners. THANK YOU!!!
