Meanwhile, the Republic, led by its two chancellors, works to unite worlds in an ever-growing community among near and distant stars. On the close-orbiting planets of Eiram and E’ronoh, the growing pains of a galaxy with limited resources but unlimited ambition are felt keenly. Publisher's Summary
New York Times Best Seller • The heroes of the High Republic era return to face a shattered peace and a fearsome foe, following the dramatic events of Light of the Jedi.
In the wake of the hyperspace disaster and the heroism of the Jedi, the Republic continues to grow, bringing more worlds together under a single unified banner. Under the leadership of Chancellor Lina Soh, the spirit of unity extends throughout the galaxy, with the Jedi and the newly established Starlight Beacon station at the vanguard.
In celebration, the chancellor plans the Republic Fair, a showcase of the possibilities and the peace of the expanding Republic - a peace the Jedi hope to foster. Stellan Gios, Bell Zettifar, Elzar Mann, and others join the event as ambassadors of harmony. But as the eyes of the galaxy turn toward the fair, so too does the fury of the Nihil. Their leader, Marchion Ro, is intent on destroying this unity. His storm descends on the pageantry and celebration, sowing chaos and exacting revenge.
As the Jedi struggle to curb the carnage of the rampaging Nihil, they come face-to-face with the true fear their enemy plans to unleash across the galaxy - the kind of fear from which even the Force cannot shield them.

Disappointing
While the production quality is excellent, this book was hard for me to enjoy. As a fan of Star Wars, I tend to enjoy most pieces of Star Wars media, even finding something to like in the most hated releases from the franchise. This book proved especially challenging to like.
The characters are for the most part too numerous and too one dimensional to form any connection with. The story jumps from character to character and plot point to plot point so fast that it becomes difficult to remember who is doing what and where.
The Jedi come across as arrogant and naive, which would be an interesting take if it didn't feel like the book was trying to force you to sympathize with them. It's hard to feel sorry for characters that continuously make mistakes that are easily avoidable. Not to mention the Chancellor of the republic who repeatedly makes terrible decisions leading to the deaths of countless innocents, yet is apparently still beloved by her republic, as if she is immune to her own failures. It feels as though we're expected to love her as well, simply for existing and regardless of her incompetence. Her foil, Senator Tia Toon, is framed as a greedy war monger we're supposed to dislike, yet is the only one who actually seems to know what's best for the republic.
The character moments often feel cheesey and over dramatic, as if to make up for the lack of character development.
Marc Thompson does a good job narrating, though I do find some of his character voices to be on the annoying side. The main villain sounds like an angsty teenaged John Malkovich, which became grating over time.
There were moments that I enjoyed. The action, while hard to follow at times, was abundant as you would expect from Star Wars. The interactions between the villains was fun and interesting.
I was hoping for higher quality content from the High Republic era, but maybe it's not for me.

The best of the high republic so far!
Story and performance were both top tier! Very engaging and definitely feels as though the nihil are a big bad threat to the whole universe, sets up the next book perfectly.

Great story… narration solid as well with some exceptions
Love the new direction that THR is going. Mr. Thompson’s narration is consistent throughout all of the stories I’ve heard him for and I enjoy his work. My only note for this book would be that, to my ear at least, he can over act/dramatize (word?) characters (particularly young and female voices); was not a fan of how he portrayed Pan in this story either. Nothing critical to my enjoyment to the story but just my 2cents.

An action filled story with lots of twist and turn
I loved this book. It further euthanized the threat that the Nihil bring with them and how their threat is challenging the Jedi causing some to lose sight of their cause and have them dabble into the dark side. This kept me very engaged and turned a character I was intrigued by in Light of the Jedi to my current favorite character in the series thus far.
I particularly loved reading along with the fight scenes. They were grand in scope and I was able to perfectly visualize in my head everything that was happening in the battles!
I never thought at any point that anything was slow or being dragged out. I thought this was a very solid book and was able to focus more on the plot since this time around it didn't need to introduce us to everyone like Light of the Jedi had to before it.

Exceptional performance
This book was so well put together in its performance and sound effects that when it is paired with this great and well written adventure it checked all my boxes. I literally laughed and cried. Can't recommend it enough if you are reading or following the High Republic entries.

not as good as the first one
I really like some of the new characters. Roe is a great villain. I like the new character Tie. but the story itself was kind of lackluster and boring I found myself and not paying attention to it often. just wasn't gripping like the first book I'll still read the third book anyway I want to know what happens next

Solid book with strong characters
Once again MT does an outstanding performance as Star Wars characters. The only major issue I had with the book was that the story felt like it was dragging along at times
