Publisher's Summary

Earth arms marines with alien technology and builds its first battle fleet! Kyle Riggs is snatched by an alien spacecraft sometime after midnight. The ship is testing everyone it catches and murdering the weak. The good news is that Kyle keeps passing tests and staying alive. The bad news is the aliens who sent this ship are the nicest ones out there.

A novel of military science fiction by best-selling author B. V. Larson, Swarm is the story of Earth's annexation by an alien empire. Long considered a primitive people on a backwater planet, humanity finds itself in the middle of a war - and faced with extinction.

Nice! Some serious SF here

Very syfy-ie, stars, space ships, aliens, the works. Definitely got a writing style going on. It took me a bit to get into the story, but you do not want to miss out on this one.

in the fullness of time...

... this story is not good strongest work.

The stories he's done later are superior, but if you're feeling the urge to get more from the author, this story fills that desire. if this is your first book by Larson, keep going, there is enough going on to keep you interested. If you have some credits to spend, try it out Undying Mercenaries. That series builds a much richer world and the characters, as voiced, are more rounded.

Mark Boyett always does excellent voice work, I search for books he's narrated, trying out authors I might not have otherwise.

Could Not Finish

The concept was good, but the writing is terrible.
It's challenging for men to write female characters, but B.V Larson takes it to a new low. The interaction between male and female charters is so bad I cringed when listening to it. I gave up after 4 painful hours.

The audio play is way better

I had originally purchased the Pandora audioplay and loved it. It listens like a modern war of the worlds, aware of it's campiness (cyborg crab battle on venus) but not going for laughs. Very clever. I was interested to learn of references to macros and Kyle Riggs but was pretty disappointed in the writing style of the novels. The balance of cheese and space action unfortunately doesn't transfer well to novel for Mr. Larson, mostly due to poor character development (something not as noticably detrimental in the audioplay). Returned it, but will happily purchase another audio play if he decides to put another one out.

Difficult to continue through the book

The concept of the book sounds great. The actual book is poorly written. The story line had good potential and started good but soon the author drove it off a cliff.
