How do I forgive? Nobel laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu has witnessed some of the worst crimes people can inflict on others. So wherever he goes, he inevitably gets asked this question. This audiobook is his answer. Writing with his daughter, Mpho, an Anglican priest, they lay out the simple but profound truths about the significance of forgiveness, how it works, why everyone needs to know how to grant it and receive it, and why granting forgiveness is the greatest gift we can give to ourselves when we have been wronged.

Soon after he opened his vineyard for business many years ago, the Wealthy Gardener noticed a puzzling fact. Everyone wanted money, but only a few people managed to accumulate it. The reason, he realized, is that most people focus on short-term gains instead of achieving lasting wealth. Eating is an indispensable human activity. As a result, whether we realize it or not, the drive to obtain food has been a major catalyst across all of history, from prehistoric times to the present. Epicure Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin said it best: "Gastronomy governs the whole life of man."

Description
Two great spiritual masters share their own hard-won wisdom about living with joy even in the face of adversity.
The occasion was a big birthday. And it inspired two close friends to get together in Dharamsala for a talk about something very important to them. The friends were His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The subject was joy. Both winners of the Nobel Prize, both great spiritual masters and moral leaders of our time, they are also known for being among the most infectiously happy people on the planet.
From the beginning the book was envisioned as a three-layer birthday cake: their own stories and teachings about joy, the most recent findings in the science of deep happiness, and the daily practices that anchor their own emotional and spiritual lives. Both the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu have been tested by great personal and national adversity, and here they share their personal stories of struggle and renewal. Now that they are both in their 80s, they especially want to spread the core message that to have joy yourself, you must bring joy to others.
Most of all, during that landmark week in Dharamsala, they demonstrated by their own exuberance, compassion, and humor how joy can be transformed from a fleeting emotion into an enduring way of life.

I would rate it more than 5 stars if I could!
Although I wish I had read The Book Of Joy a lot earlier, I ended up reading it at the most perfect time in my life. It is truly my favourite book and has changed my view on life completely. I highly recommend this book to any person in search of a happier and more peaceful way of living (basically everyone lol) And even so, for the people who already do live a happy life, still, read this book! Regardless of the situation you may be in and/or religious belief, there are countless of lessons and truth to take away from all the wisdom and experience both His Holiness The Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu share throughout the book.
At first, I was a little skeptical about how this book would play out due to differences of each spiritual leader. How they grew up, where they grew up, what they’ve been through and what they believe in/what they don’t.. but boy, was I wrong. It really did prove that it is much more deeper than that. I am really glad to have read this book and to have learned so much from the beginning to the very end. I found myself sticky-tabbing parts of the book (since I too have the hardcover) and listening to parts over and over. Despite it being 10+ hrs, it felt as if it were not long enough, I was quite sad to hear it finish. But also, very grateful to have been taught so much about life with suffering, pain, anger, frustration, love, compassion, faith and of course, joy! There’s so much positives I can say about this book, but I’ll leave you to it and maybe it’ll mean something much more to you!

Inspirational
This book was inspirational and changed my life. Other people, rather than self, are number one. Incredible the way that I greet people with a smile on my face brings immediate happiness to our conversation. Helping others, rather than thinking about my needs, has brought a feeling of peace to me.

Required Reading for Every Human Being
I've read a lot of spiritual books, but this one is so exceptional that I would put it in the category of scripture. The writing is engaging and superb. The wisdom contained in it's pages is beyond measure. I loved the dramatic reading of the audiobook which made it feel as if I was listening to the Dalai Lama and Bishop Desmond Tutu speaking. I consider this book required reading for every human being.

An Important Book
One criteria I have for giving a book 5 stars is if I feel like I would read it again, or if I feel it is an important book for me. Both apply to The Book of Joy. The narrators did an absolutely wonderful job of evoking the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu. Douglas Carlton Abrams did well by his privilege of co-writing and framing the book with both spiritual leaders. I would consider re-buying it to own a physical copy. There's a lot to reference. There are so many ideas, some quite challenging, which merit more time for thinking and reflection. To put it another way, I am grateful for this book. It is guiding and inspirational.
