Description

Steve Patterson's The Book of Letters I Didn't Know Where to Send is a collection of - wait for it - letters, written by award-winning stand-up comedian - you guessed it - Steve Patterson. The host of CBC Radio's The Debaters since 2007, Steve Patterson has become a household name, with more than 700,000 listeners tuning in each week. He has performed at several of the Just for Laughs prestigious televised galas, including one hosted by Steve Martin. Considered to be the highlight of the show by the audience and critics alike, Patterson's performance prompted the legendary Martin to quip, "If I'd known he was going to be THAT good, I would have cancelled him."

Patterson's letters, long a staple of his stand-up comedy routine, address a number of recipients, from real people, to groups, to inanimate objects and concepts. He airs grievances, offers support, or creates just plain confusion in unplainly humorous prose. From the political to the personal, from the philosophical to the mundane, no subject - or target - is off limits.

Patterson's letters may not change the world, but frankly, it's too early to tell. In these letters, he pleads, begs, cajoles, grovels, and always makes a compelling argument. He would like men to stop wearing Spandex bike shorts. He would like airlines to stop selling seats they don't have. He would like gluten to explain itself. He would like his nine-year-old self to know everything will be all right....

Not funny & very CBCish

Steve Patterson appears to be typical CBC material. So extremely left-wing that he was impossible to listen to for long. Rather than discuss things based on cleverness, he just rails against anyone who thinks differently; a very divisive approach. Adding to that one-track thinking was a surprising lack of being funny.

Not for me. Although it was of little interest, for me, not worth my time to listen to it.

I didn’t find it interesting, informative or entertaining. Not for me. I would not recommend it to others. I only listen for half an hour and gave up on it.

Sour ramblings.

I'll keep this short, the fact that this audio book is a collection of letters should tell you everything you need to know about it, as it is much like letters. Boring, wordy and written by people who are either out of touch with the present or consider themselves to be haughtier than the rest of us. While the letters purport to be comedic they are rambling complaints about mundane subjects akin to something Grandpa Simpson would write, coming from a man who would like to convince us of his moral superiority while really revealing his conceitedness: "why won't minivan driving losers just get out of the way and let me pass them in my turbo charged sports car?" he bemoans. I always assumed Patterson's terrible puns on the debaters were supposed to be intentionally bad, after listening to this audio book it appears that is just his level of comedic ability.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed these letters but have one huge dislike. Why did I have to listen to the title of each letter twice? Once as the title followed immediately by the exact words as a salutation. Enormously annoying.
