There's a damsel in distress and accusations of attempted murder flying around, but it's not in the comfortable confines of the English countryside; it's in the very distant city of Damascus. Lennox must go and investigate, although he's not too keen on exotic locations, and his old retainer Greggs is distinctly averse to the very idea. Nevertheless, ex-Chief Inspector Swift persuades them, and they reach the ancient city to discover a movie crew, a spy, and a couple of mysterious ladies.

Delightful!
If you love Golden Age mysteries, the Heathcliff Lennox series is even better. This third in the series is the best yet. Who can resist a loney Scottish castle on Halloween? The product of a mature, bright, and amusing mind, Heathcliff's world is an entertainment oasis in the yawning desert of insipid muffin mysteries. The incredibly talented narrator, Sam Dewhurst-Phillips, seals the deal. Karen Baugh Menuhin is my hero; I can't wait for the next book.

PANDEMIC RELIEF
If ever there was a time for discovering a new series of entertaining books, this was it. I can attribute my insulation adaption to Karen Menuhin's three English murder mysteries and Sam Dewhurst-Phillips' narration. Not normally a mystery
reader, I was immediately caught up in the series. In this third book, Karen brought the ancient history of Braeburn Castle to the fore-all unknown to me. I look forward to more mysteries in Karen's series and especially to Sam Dewhurst-Phillips' ingenious narrations. They certainly make a masterful combination.

A whodunnit can’t have characters that may not be real
You can’t have a murder mystery with a character who may or may not be real. I thought it unusual that no one questions who Ms Fairchild is and who invited her to the castle. That she dropped out of thin air would make her a prime suspect. We are never told who she is except that she hitched a ride to the island pretending to have arrived with Heathcliffe. It is all right to have a character who is enigmatic but not one who is a gate-crasher but is somehow never investigated and no one ever asks her: who are you and who invited you here? What is the point of giving readers clues to the murder if some of the clues are not really clues because this is Halloween and anything can happen. It doesn’t work to mix supernatural elements into a whodunnit. Working out the clues are what makes reading a whodunnit fun. The two stars are for the beautiful writing. But the plot falls flat.

Perfect! Again.
Sam Dewhurst-Phillips makes Karen Baugh Menuhin’s characters come alive! This mystery had my attention from the first moment. It was again lovely to reconnect with old characters from earlier stories and meet new ones as well as they all work together to unfold this mystery. I especially loved the setting. The accents and tones for each character were so enjoyable. The only drawback is awaiting the next release in this series!

Yawn Unless You Love History
Yep, I said it. I really almost went to sleep several times listening to this book. I do love an upper class British man’s accent, but the excellent performance of the narrator could not keep my interest. Anyone with an interest in Celtic and Viking history of the UK would love it, but it left me cold. I did wonder how all those people can just sit about all day, but then 1921 was before there was a true middle class in Great Britain. History buff? Go for it. Not so much? Give it a pass. I gave it two because the grammar is impeccable. That’s rare these days.
