Histoire
For over 100 years, thousands of Aboriginal children passed through the Canadian residential school system. Begun in the 1870s, it was intended, in the words of government officials, to bring these children into the “circle of civilization,” the results, however, were far different. More often, the schools provided an inferior education in an atmosphere of neglect, disease, and often abuse. Using previously unreleased government documents, historian John S. Milloy provides a full picture of the history and reality of the residential school system.

This deeply personal memoir, cowritten by singer-songwriter, renowned mental health advocate, and recent Order of Canada recipient Séan McCann and wife Andrea Aragon, leaves no stone unturned. Detailing in powerful and lyrical prose a Newfoundland childhood indoctrinated in strict Catholic faith, the creation of the wildly successful Great Big Sea, and the battle with alcoholism that nearly cost them everything, McCann and Aragon offer listeners a story of reaching international fame and finding rock bottom.

Is there a more sociable province than Newfoundland and Labrador? Or anywhere in Canada with a greater reputation for coming to the rescue of those in need? At this time of Covid, singer, songwriter and best-selling author Alan Doyle is feeling everyone's pain. Off the road and spending more days at home than he has since he was a child hawking cod tongues on the wharfs of Petty Harbour, he misses the crowds and companionship of performing. We're all experiencing our own version of that deprivation, and Alan, one of Newfoundland's finest storytellers, wants to offer a little balm.

Description
Perfect for fans of the musical Come From Away!
When 38 jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land at Gander International Airport in Canada by the closing of U.S. airspace on September 11, the population of this small town on Newfoundland Island swelled from 10,300 to nearly 17,000. The citizens of Gander met the stranded passengers with an overwhelming display of friendship and goodwill. As the passengers stepped from the airplanes, exhausted, hungry and distraught after being held on board for nearly 24 hours while security checked all of the baggage, they were greeted with a feast prepared by the townspeople. Local bus drivers who had been on strike came off the picket lines to transport the passengers to the various shelters set up in local schools and churches. Linens and toiletries were bought and donated. A middle school provided showers, as well as access to computers, email, and televisions, allowing the passengers to stay in touch with family and follow the news.

Wonderful!
I bought my hardcover copy at the airplane museum in Gander during my visit in August 2004. I devoured the book. I couldn't stop reading it. I just listened to the Audiobook (August 2022) and it still gripped me like my first reading.
Spring of 2021 I was in Newfoundland again and found out about tribute in Appleton. I made sure to go see it and take a moment.
I didn't lose anyone and I didn't know anyone directly affected, but it was something that really affected me anyway.
Jim Defede did a masterful job in his telling of these stranded people's few days in Gander, NL

The Best Feel Good Book
Ray Porter is the best Narrater.
The bar sene with the screech, the Kissing of the cod and the Beatles karaoke was just amazing. This book leaves you feeling that there’s hope in humanity.

I can’t stop telling people about this book…
Such a heart warming book! I loved it! Faith restored in the goodness of people. I couldn’t stop talking about it, the inspiring people, the stories, the desire to want to be that kind of person to help others in times of challenge. Also brought on a lot of reflection on where we were on 9/11 and how we were impacted. I want to visit Gander!

Proud to be Canadian
Telling the individual stories of passengers really brought to life the full meaning of the efforts of so many small town folks to bring positivity into a horrific time for the affected people. I am proud to be Canadian and this story reinforced that the kindness of Canadians is alive and well. Thank you to all the people involved in helping on 9/11.

Proud Canadian
I remember hearing about this act a while after 9/11 but wasn't aware of how many people were involved. the people of our east coast are always so kind and willing to help and that has really shone through this time of need

Beautifully done. I became familiar with the individuals whom I’ve watched in interviews and can picture them as their story is told. Thank you.
