Histoire
When the Iraq war began, conservationist Lawrence Anthony could think of only one thing: the fate of the Baghdad Zoo, caught in the crossfire at the heart of the city. Once Anthony entered Iraq, he discovered that hostilities and uncontrolled looting had devastated the zoo and its animals. Working with members of the zoo staff and a few compassionate U.S. soldiers, Anthony defended the zoo, bartered for food on war-torn streets, and scoured bombed palaces for desperately needed supplies.

When Lawrence Anthony learned that the northern white rhino, living in the war-ravaged Congo, was on the very brink of extinction, he knew he had to act. If the world lost the sub-species, it would be the largest land mammal since the woolly mammoth to go extinct. In The Last Rhinos, Anthony recounts his attempts to save these remarkable animals. The demand for rhino horns in the Far East has turned poaching into a dangerous black market that threatens the lives of not just these rare beasts, but also the rangers who protect them.

Thrive or die: That's the rule of evolution. Despite this brutal logic, some species have learned to survive in even the most hostile conditions. Others couldn't - and perished. While incremental genetic adaptations hone the physiology of nearly every creature on this planet, there's another evolutionary force that is just as important: the power of choice. In this explosive investigation into the limits of endurance, journalist Scott Carney discovers how humans can wedge control over automatic physiological responses into the breaking point between stress and biology.

Description
Audie Award Winner, Biography/Memoir, 2014
When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.
The Elephant Whisperer is a heartwarming, exciting, funny, and sometimes sad account of Anthony's experiences with these huge yet sympathetic creatures. Set against the background of life on an African game reserve, with unforgettable characters and exotic wildlife, it is a delightful book that will appeal to animal lovers and adventurous souls everywhere.

Loved this book, highly recommend it!
This book was completely enthralling and unforgettable. Those I have shared this book with, love it as much as I do. A very worthwhile read!
One of the ways I measure a good book, is if it leaves me with characters and scenes to savour overtime like how we cherish fond memories, and this book certainly gave me plenty to savour.

I feel reserved about the reserve
I think my main "problem" with this book is that a very long time ago, I read Cynthia Moss's book "Elephant Memories: Thirteen Years in the Life of an Elephant Family" (1988) about her studying of wild elephants in Kenya's Amboseli National Park and that book stayed with me forever. Cynthia Moss had a scientist's approach in her book and it was fascinating. In this book however, it feels like Lawrence Anthony is continually congratulating himself of how well he does with the elephants. Maybe he did, who am I to say the contrary, but that was not the perspective I was looking for. I love elephants. I think they are the most beautiful, elegant despite their size, majestic and powerful creatures on earth and they more than deserve to be protected from poachers. But I don't like the fact that the man who is responsible for a reserve of elephants talks about them as "my" elephants. Those animals are supposed to be free and not tamed, they cannot "belong" to anyone and should not be talked about as anyone's property.

Absolutely Engaging and Inspiring
This is a compelling account of how one man's love for wildlife, and especially elephants, makes a sanctuary work for a herd that has been traumatized by human brutality.
The author underlines the intelligence and sensitivity of these amazing beings and through his experiences impresses upon the reader the urgent need to understand and protect them.
Simon Vance is a perfect narrator.
The story is both heart rending and uplifting.

This book is a journey by Lawrence Anthony to save a troubled herd of elephants, and along the way, he comes to understand and appreciate what kind of animal they are and what they are capable of. Also giving the reader a glimpse of life and struggles with these wild animals. This is a real gift, starting to understand these awesome animals! #Audible1
