Description

A groundbreaking approach to understanding and parenting children who frequently exhibit severe fits of temper and other intractable behaviors, from a distinguished clinician and pioneer in this field.

What’s an explosive child? A child who responds to routine problems with extreme frustration - crying, screaming, swearing, kicking, hitting, biting, spitting, destroying property, and worse. A child whose frequent, severe outbursts leave his or her parents feeling frustrated, scared, worried, and desperate for help. Most of these parents have tried everything - reasoning, explaining, punishing, sticker charts, therapy, medication - but to no avail. They can’t figure out why their child acts the way he or she does; they wonder why the strategies that work for other kids don’t work for theirs; and they don’t know what to do instead.

Dr. Ross Greene, a distinguished clinician and pioneer in the treatment of kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges, has worked with thousands of explosive children, and he has good news: These kids aren’t attention-seeking, manipulative, or unmotivated, and their parents aren’t passive, permissive pushovers. Rather, explosive kids are lacking some crucial skills in the domains of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance, and problem solving, and they require a different approach to parenting.

Throughout this compassionate, insightful, and practical book, Dr. Greene provides a new conceptual framework for understanding their difficulties, based on research in the neurosciences. He explains why traditional parenting and treatment often don’t work with these children, and he describes what to do instead. Instead of relying on rewarding and punishing, Dr. Greene’s "Collaborative Problem Solving" model promotes working with explosive children to solve the problems that precipitate explosive episodes, and teaching these kids the skills they lack.

Great book - difficult to listen to narration :(

The book is awesome and has a lot of great info. The narration is unfortunately robotic, with little variation, which makes it hard to focus on the info being provided. Some key words are also consistently pronounced with the accent on the wrong syllable ( like "frustration"), which when listening to an entire book becomes aggravating. I strongly recommend the book but if you have the time to read it, rather than listen to it, I would recommend you go that route.

Good content, awful narration.

Sounds like a screen reader rather than human narration. The content is excellent, but hard to choke it down in this format.

The Updated Version is So Much BETTER!!

I read the original and thought it was amazing, but this book was so revolutionary of the way parenting should be, or just communicating with kids in general.

Best. Book!

Was Hesitant at First, But Loved It

As a mom of a really moody toddler, I was really skeptical. I read the reviews on Amazon and Audible and wasn't sure if this book was going to help at all. And also, I've never really been a fan of Audible, but since I'm so busy, this was the best option to be able to get some info and still watch my kids. Honestly, I was wrong. The narrator was outstanding, and definitely not boring at all. She made me feel like I was actually there and sorta like watching TV. She's great at helping people to feel interested in reading such dense material. Ross was great, but a little repetitive with the Plan B methods. I feel all in all satisfied. Would have just loved more sections on dealing with Teenagers and more situations/examples.

Overall, great. Five stars.

Convicting Book, But I Needed to Hear It

Definitely had found myself being convicted of assuming my child was just choosing to be difficult and this has greatly helped me to forgive my child and love her better through the hard times. Some of the content about explosive children I actually saw in myself. Dr Greene’s strategies have ironically helped my own marriage with its treatment of those who are explosive. The audible version is the one I read. I liked the narrators story telling ability.

Why Haven't I Heard of This Sooner? Life CHANGING!

Dr. Greene is a God-given gift on earth. He's a brilliant genius and has literally helped me through this book work through some hard issues that my husband and I are facing with our child. The stories that he shares are so relatable and he makes it so easy to understand the concepts that he's trying to teach. Jessica is also a brilliant story-teller and I thought she did an amazing job acting out the stories and characters.

Why the hate? Don’t listen to the haters

I enjoyed the book and wasn’t about to rate it or write anything until I saw the hilarious hateful reviews by the few who seem to have bad taste in audio. If you don’t like someone’s voice, don’t over exaggerate. I think she did a great job and was professional. People don’t understand how much hard work goes into narration, but I’ve tried reading books out loud and I get tired after the third page!
It was an amazing book filled with great content and while the narrator could probably improve on some of her over-pronounciations, she’s far from being a “bad reader.” I think it’s also her first real book that she did since I looked her up too. So be nice guys. Give this book a shot, it’s great! I don’t tolerate bullying.

I am so happy I finally found the right book

Seriously, listen to what the others are saying. This book really will change the way you see your child and the way you see how perhaps you might be hurting your kid more than helping him or her to improve. Tough lessons in this book, but I am so glad I listened to the whole thing. Took a while though! Haha! Loved the acting in this as well. She did a good job reading the book and making me interested.

Sensational! I'm a MFT student.

Great book I had to listen to for my fast track course on child and parent relationships. Pretty enjoyable at times too, and the acting was pretty good as well. I was surprised.

Helpful for dealing with a child who has RAD

It's heavy reading, but I listened to it while I was driving. So many books and therapists explain WHY a child is explosive. This book gives you a plan of action.

hooray finally for a helpful parenting book!

I feel, as a parent of constant crying children that I've gone through at least 10 parenting books before joining a group via Facebook and learning about this book from other parents. Definitely glad I found this gem!

Great

Was busy changing diapers and running back and forth in between listening to this book, but am so glad to have finally finished it. Even though my children are just reaching 2 years old, I feel like I'm prepared to handle any difficulties that may arise when they're older. Definitely recommend this to any parent out there. Really great purchase and an amazing resource I'll be referring to again and again.
