Publisher's Summary

An engaging and practical guided tour of the simple and nature-inspired ways that Finns stay happy and healthy - including the powerful concept of sisu, or everyday courage

Forget hygge - it's time to blow out the candles and get out into the world! Journalist Katja Pantzar did just that, taking the huge leap to move to the remote Nordic country of Finland. What she discovered there transformed her body, mind, and spirit. In this engaging and practical guide, she shows listeners how to embrace the "keep it simple and sensible" daily practices that make Finns one of the happiest populations in the world, year after year.

Topics include:

  • Movement as medicine: How walking, biking and swimming every day are good for what ails us - and best done outside the confines of a gym.
  • Forest therapy: Why there's no substitute for getting out into nature on a regular basis.
  • Healthy eating: What the Nordic diet can teach us all about feeding body, mind, and soul.
  • The gift of sisu: Why Finns embrace a special form of courage, grit and determination as a national virtue - and how anyone can dig deeper to survive and thrive through tough times.

If you've ever wondered if there's a better, simpler way to find happiness and good heath, look no further. The Finns have a word for that, and this empowering audiobook shows us how to achieve it.

A lot of repetition. A lot of repetition.

I did enjoy this book and I think I will adopt alot of the lifestyle changes that are suggested, as I have already started taking daily cold dips or showers. However, I did not enjoy how much the author repeated herself. Repeating something once or twice is fine, but by the 7th or 8th time of hearing the same thing, it's kind of annoying.

What version of Canada did she live in??

I guess she wrote this book years after she left Canada, so she’s maybe describing the 90’s? But the version of Toronto and especially Vancouver she writes about is perplexing and doesn’t sound like the Canada I know. You can choose to live whatever kind of life you want in those cities, it was just HER life that was all celebrities and cocktails and cramped rush hours. The writer describes Finland like it’s some magical place (and it does sound nice enough) but it also sounds pretty similar to Canada... a resilient people, a strong welfare state, revelling in the cold weather, lots of bike paths, tons of time in nature. Sure there are consumerists in every culture, but she overstates the case. It sounds more like she was just on a bad path (and in all fairness she does explain that she was depressed and her job sounded horrible) but that’s more about her choices and personal situation than there being a remarkable cultural/lifestyle difference in Finland. This is all relevant because it undercut her as a reliable narrator for everything else she described: if she misunderstands Canada this badly, who knows if there’s any value in what she has to say about Finland? Too bad. Good narration though. Much preferred Helen Russell’s “My Year of Living Danishly”.

No content.

The narrators voice was soft and relaxing - unfortunately, paired with the lacklustre content, I fell asleep most of the times I tried to listen. To sum it up - it’s an entire book about how the narrator moved to Finland and found polar dips (cold water swimming), to be inspiring. :/

Wow !

A good dose of commonsense in the hectic world we live in today. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to take care of their mental, spiritual, physical, emotional and financial health with simple down to earth actions. Very liberating.

Good

A nice overview of nordic approach to minimalism, health and well being... should be a good read for newbies looking into this areas of life. For others, just a nice collection of banal reminders... which is also fine.
