For the first time in history, the secrets of the living brain are being revealed by a battery of high-tech brain scans devised by physicists. Now what was once solely the province of science fiction has become a startling reality. Recording memories, telepathy, videotaping our dreams, mind control, avatars, and telekinesis are not only possible; they already exist.

When Newton discovered the law of gravity, he unified the rules governing the heavens and the Earth. Since then, physicists have been placing new forces into ever-grander theories. But perhaps the ultimate challenge is achieving a monumental synthesis of the two remaining theories—relativity and the quantum theory. This would be the crowning achievement of science, a profound merging of all the forces of nature into one beautiful, magnificent equation to unlock the deepest mysteries in science: What happened before the Big Bang?

Are there other dimensions beyond our own? Is time travel possible? Can we change the past? Are there gateways to parallel universes? All of us have pondered such questions, but there was a time when scientists dismissed these notions as outlandish speculations. Not any more. Today, they are the focus of the most intense scientific activity in recent memory. In Hyperspace, Michio Kaku offers the first book-length tour of the most exciting (and perhaps most bizarre) work in modern physics.

Story
The runaway success of the microchip processor may be reaching its end. Running up against the physical constraints of smaller and smaller sizes, traditional silicon chips are not likely to prove useful in solving humanity’s greatest challenges, from climate change, to global starvation, to incurable diseases. But the quantum computer, which harnesses the power and complexity of the atomic realm, already promises to be every bit as revolutionary as the transistor and microchip once were.

In The Quantum Universe, Brian Cox and Jeff Forshaw approach the world of quantum mechanics in the same way they did in Why Does E=mc2? and make fundamental scientific principles accessible - and fascinating - to everyone. The subatomic realm has a reputation for weirdness, spawning any number of profound misunderstandings, journeys into Eastern mysticism, and woolly pronouncements on the interconnectedness of all things. Cox and Forshaw's contention? There is no need for quantum mechanics to be viewed this way.

Publisher's Summary
New York Times best seller
The number-one best-selling author of The Future of the Mind traverses the frontiers of astrophysics, artificial intelligence, and technology to offer a stunning vision of man's future in space, from settling Mars to traveling to distant galaxies.
We are entering a new Golden Age of space exploration. With irrepressible enthusiasm and a deep understanding of the cutting-edge research in space travel, world-renowned physicist and futurist Dr. Michio Kaku presents a compelling vision of how humanity may develop a sustainable civilization in outer space. He reveals the developments in robotics, nanotechnology, and biotechnology that may allow us to terraform and build habitable cities on Mars and beyond. He then journeys out of our solar system and discusses how new technologies such as nanoships, laser sails, and fusion rockets may actually make interstellar travel a possibility.
We travel beyond our galaxy, and even beyond our universe, as Kaku investigates some of the hottest topics in science today, including warp drive, wormholes, hyperspace, parallel universes, and the multiverse. Ultimately, he shows us how humans may someday achieve a form of immortality and be able to leave our bodies entirely, laser porting to new havens in space.
What the critics say
"Feodor Chin's narration is unflaggingly positive.... Chin's reading is anchored in a journalistic tone that matches the author's pop-science style - part scientific, part anecdotal, and part speculation." (AudioFile)

Skimming the surface
The subject is expansive. While many interesting topics are introduced, most are truncated by the author's opinion or simplified predictions. Without any background in this area, the book is a reasonable and optimistic starting point. Unfortunately, familiarity with specific topics made me wish for a more focused book.

speculation without any basis is just fantasy...
mr kaku has completely gone off the rails, the predictions are mostly about the near future but lacks any basis on current science. maybe that's fine for far future speculation where he can hand wave in anything but near future speculation should be rooted on current understandings

Great book on the future of human space travel!
Engaging and interesting read on the current scope of technology as well as its potential based on our knowledge (and in some places lack of knowledge) of physics. Definitely recommended!

Very disappointing
Back in the 90s Michio Kaku was a good science comm writer that was able to generate interest in string theory subjects, even in those less inclined to such arcane matters.
His writing career moved later on to less rigorous subjects such as those found in “Science of the impossible” and “Science of the future”. These books were still somewhat scientific and still fun.
The new offering by Mr. Kaku is not only not fun, but its arguments are poorly built, its science often outdated and its overall outlook just plain childish.

Not his best work
This book was a simplified summary of scientific theory and possible technological developments. It didn't explore new ideas like some of this author's other books. Good if you are new to the topic, but repetitive if you already have some knowledge in this area. #Audible1
