Leigh Collier has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life. She has a good job as a defense attorney, a daughter doing well in school, and even her divorce is relatively civilized - her life is just as unremarkable as she’d always hoped it would be. But Leigh’s ordinary life masks a childhood that was far from average...a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and finally torn apart by a devastating act of violence.

A small Georgia town erupts in panic when a young college professor is found brutally mutilated in the local diner. But it's only when town pediatrician and coroner Sara Linton does the autopsy that the full extent of the killer's twisted work becomes clear. Sara's ex-husband, Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver, leads the investigation - a trail of terror that grows increasingly macabre when another local woman is found crucified a few days later.

Description
Two girls are forced into the woods at gunpoint. One runs for her life. One is left behind....
Twenty-eight years ago, Charlotte and Samantha Quinn's happy small-town family life was torn apart by a terrifying attack on their family home. It left their mother dead. It left their father - Pikeville's notorious defense attorney - devastated. And it left the family fractured beyond repair, consumed by secrets from that terrible night.
Twenty-eight years later, Charlie has followed in her father's footsteps to become a lawyer herself - the ideal good daughter. But when violence comes to Pikeville again - and a shocking tragedy leaves the whole town traumatized - Charlie is plunged into a nightmare. Not only is she the first witness on the scene, but it's a case that unleashes the terrible memories she's spent so long trying to suppress. Because the shocking truth about the crime that destroyed her family nearly 30 years ago won't stay buried forever.
Packed with twists and turns, brimming with emotion and heart, The Good Daughter is fiction at its most thrilling.

Ok but not great
I feel like I’m a minority in my feelings about this book. I chose it because there were so many wonderful reviews for it, I figured I couldn’t go wrong. But in the end I’m left feeling sort of empty about it all.
I found the writing to be quite repetitive at times which was annoying. “She picked up her glasses.” “She stirred her tea.” She rubbed the cats ears.” “She looked out the window.” “Sam said.” “Charlie said.” “Rusty said.”
Over and over again the author uses the exact same wording. I used to write like this when I was in elementary school.
Some of the reviews that I read before starting talked about the book keeping them on the edge of their seat. They were unable to put the book down. Always wanting to know what happens next. Twists and turns. Etc etc. Honestly I found this book rather boring and slow. It had its moments, times when I felt interested and actually wanted to keep going. But more often than not it was just a lot of blathering on about the characters doing ordinary daily things like walking or swimming or looking for something in a messy office full of papers.
There were no twists or turns. I had the ending figured out very early on. I kept wondering if maybe the author would throw a curve ball my way and make me gasp in astonishment when I realized I was wrong about the ending. But no. The ending played out exactly the way I said it would.
Overall I was disappointed. I had really high hopes for this book and it let me down.
On a more positive note I will say that I enjoyed several of the characters, as some of their relationships were enjoyable.
The narrator did a decent job. Definitely not the best one I’ve listened to, but she was alright.
I definitely won’t be listening to this book again.

The Good Daughter
Overall it was a good story, however it is very dark so be aware of that going in. There are also a lot of parts that repeat for emphasis and to retell from different POV, however it's overdone and makes the book a bit tedious at times.
There were quite a few twists, most of which I saw coming but still made for a good story.
The main thing I did not like about this audio book was the narrator. She put to much emphasis on H's in words like What and Who. At times her pronunciations felt distracting, but that might just be me.

Fine
Alright story, interesting with some good twists and turns. I found the narrator annoying with her screaming bit. Some might find it engaging but to me it was like finger nails on a chalk board. I found myself dreading it and turning the volume down in anticipation.

2 Hours of Entertainment, 16 of boredom
Very little happens in this book, with only the beginning and ending being entertaining. The story at its heart, is a family drama, with the crime taking a backseat. The family drama however, is boring. If this book was half the length I probably would have thoroughly enjoyed it. All the family drama was repetitive and the emotions were already evoked early on, that it felt like the story was dragging on.

Disgusting
Don’t mind who done it books and murder mysteries but this one was absolutely disgusting. The unnecessary details of the brutality of the mothers murder sickened me and I fast forwarded through it. Not really worthy of one star but I can’t advance unless I mark it

What a story!
As a relatively new "listener" of books, I am so glad this was one of my first picks. Karin Slaughter does and amazing job of keeping me at the edge of my seat with all the twists and turns as she slowly fleshes out the story. I loved the 2 voices of Charli and Sam, and Kathleen Early was masterful at bringing their stories to life. Early speaks with such emotion that truly makes listening to this story a gift.

Don’t pay full price
The Good Daughter was an alright book, but that great. Not worth full price or a credit. Maybe it was on a daily deal. I found there to be A LOT of repetition of facts. Sometimes the repetition was necessary for the storyline, but sometimes it made for tedious narrating. The narrator was okay; however, her enunciation of words with “wh” at the beginning was starting to annoy me by the end of the book.

Overly descriptive and repetitive
This book was unnecessarily long and overly descriptive of gory elements, reliving and repeating them over and over in the story. The main character was annoying AF. I skipped several periods and didn’t feel like I had missed anything, just wanted it done!

Much too graphic
I honestly have no idea how this author became so famous. Are people really that admiring of her overly graphic and detailed descriptions of gore and violence? I am a self proclaimed lover of true crime and dark stories and movies and I simply could not stomach the unnecessary porn like description of violence against women. This is a running theme in all her stories and is very repugnant to me. Due to her popularity I decided to try this second book. It will certainly be the last one I ever read by this author.
