For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Story
After the old gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrio. Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame, and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. As whispers of war echo over the plains and across the fjords, fate follows the footsteps of three people. All three will shape the fate of the world, as it once more teeters on the edge of chaos.

The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. They remember him as a monster: the devil who destroyed a sun, casually annihilating four billion human lives - even the emperor himself - against Imperial orders. But Hadrian was not a hero. He was not a monster. He was not even a soldier. Fleeing his father and a future as a torturer, Hadrian finds himself stranded on a strange, backwater world.

Publisher's Summary
They say Black Dow's killed more men than winter, and clawed his way to the throne of the North up a hill of skulls. The King of the Union, ever a jealous neighbour, is not about to stand smiling by while he claws his way any higher. The orders have been given and the armies are toiling through the northern mud. Thousands of men are converging on a forgotten ring of stones, on a worthless hill, in an unimportant valley, and they've brought a lot of sharpened metal with them.
Over three bloody days of battle, the fate of the North will be decided. But with both sides riddled by intrigues, follies, feuds and petty jealousies, it is unlikely to be the noblest hearts or even the strongest arms that prevail.
Three men. One battle. No Heroes.

Fantastic characters, excellent story and another great story by Joe Abercrombie.
Better Served Cold edges it slightly but The Heroes is a close second in the series for me. Now on to Red Country.

An incredibly written decontruction of war, folly, and what it means to be a hero, brought to life by some of the best characters in the series. An absolute must read for fans of the first law trilogy.

The books that have come after the first Law trilogy have been outstanding and this one is no different. Loved it. I wish they had added battle sounds to this book as it has so many epic battles and having those sounds in there would be awesome.

This is a series review for the following books:
- The Blade Itself
- Before They Are Hanged
- Last Argument Of Kings
- Best Served Cold
- The Heroes
- Red Country
- Sharp Ends (read chronologically w.r.t. the series)

I can say with confidence that this is among the best stories I've had the pleasure of experiencing. Author Joe Abercrombie has crafted a politically and morally intricate world where every detail, large or small, matters. Inhabiting this world are truly human characters who you'll laugh, dread, and triumph alongside in their efforts to overcome the Great Leveller's somber inevitability. Narrator Steven Pacey brings these characters to life, giving each a distinct voice and demeanor while consistently nailing the tones and puches thrown by Joe Abercrombie's writing. I hope to see the continued collaboration of this genius duo.
