Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

After the old gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrio. Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame, and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. Description
They say that the Thorn of Camorr can beat anyone in a fight. They say he steals from the rich and gives to the poor. They say he's part man, part myth, and mostly street-corner rumor. And they are wrong on every count. Only averagely tall, slender, and god-awful with a sword, Locke Lamora is the fabled Thorn, and the greatest weapons at his disposal are his wit and cunning.
He steals from the rich - they're the only ones worth stealing from - but the poor can go steal for themselves. What Locke cons, wheedles and tricks into his possession is strictly for him and his band of fellow con-artists and thieves: the Gentleman Bastards. Together their domain is the city of Camorr. Built of Elderglass by a race no-one remembers, it's a city of shifting revels, filthy canals, baroque palaces, and crowded cemeteries. Home to Dons, merchants, soldiers, beggars, cripples, and feral children. And to Capa Barsavi, the criminal mastermind who runs the city.

Fantastic narrator and voice!
The Oliver twist trope, but beautifully more complex and adulted. My wife was listening at first and said she knew exactly where the story was headed. So many sharp twists and turns. Exactly what I wanted this book to be! Just finished two and three and thought I would come back and give book 1 some love.

Not sure what all the rave was about
I decided to pick up this series after finishing The First Law as it was recommended by a few redditers but I guess we can't all be Abercrombie and Pacey.
I got a quarter of the way through the first book and had to fight to keep going as the author would go on tangents of detail dumping and my eyes/ears would just glaze over.
In the end I managed to slog through all 3 books out of pure stubborness as we would eventually get back to the actual story.
Overall the story was good but it didn't have a direction - like each book didn't know where the series was headed so it just wandered around in the dark and stumbled across foes.
Speaking of foes and heros, I think it would have probably been a better story and flowed better if magic didnt exist in this world and our 2 main characters were up against normal foes instead of the almost unlimited powers of the Bondsmagi who in their own rights are gods.
Narration was good but nothing spectacular.

This was alright
I made the mistake of listening to this after Blacktongue Thief (which is superior by a lot) and honestly that may have affected my thoughts on this. It’s not great, it’s not bad, it’s just.. okay. I probably won’t rush to check out anything further from this series.

Light-Touch Introduction To A True Scoundrel
This book is basically a mix of 'The Sting', 'The Great Train Robbery', and 'Mission Impossible'.. set in a low-magic, medieval-level-of-development Fantasy reality where ruthless, greedy human factions vie for supremacy & share their world with monstrous venomous sea creatures. 'Locke Lamora' - leader of the elite thieving/grifting 'Gentleman Bastards' - goes in-disguise and under-cover to economically wipe out one of the most powerful families in the ancient city of 'Camorr'. Scott Lynch writes a twisty-turny con, competent law enforcement ("Yellowjackets") serving the Duke, and a credible dangerous threat to the team in the person of Gangster Kingpin "Capa" Barsavi and his henchmen. Lynch's tone is remarkably amusing & lighthearted, his dialogue is clever, his gritty exposition/worldbuilding is impressive, and his action choreography is top-notch.
Less fortuitous is the narration from Michael Page: to be sure, his diction, timbre, and cadence are professional (albeit unspectacular) - and he clearly understands the author's intended tone - but some of his chosen character voices are straight-up cartoonish. Altogether, the performance is best described as "adequate".
In toto, 'The Lies Of Locke Lamora' rates 8.5 stars out of 10. This entertaining audiobook is easily worth a Credit for Fantasy fans looking for a great way to spend a few quiet afternoons.
