About this listen

The indomitable Amelia Peabody and her husband, known to many as "the Father of Curses", are into archaeology and mischief again. This third in the series brings the reader once more into Egypt and the shady world of black market antiquities. The winter excavation season has hardly yet begun when Amelia stumbles onto what looks suspiciously like a ring of thieves.

Amelia's not the type to take no for an answer, and pretty soon the Emerson family (Master Ramses, a prodigious young intellect is joining his parents for the first time) is tracking down a character known only as The Master Criminal. Or is the Master Criminal tracking them?

What the critics say

"A writer so popular that the public library has to keep her books under lock and key." (Washington Post Book World)

The third of the Amelia Peabody novels, The Mummy Case, details the adventures of Emerson, Amelia, and their son, Ramses. Ramses is about 7 years old, and a prodigy and polymath. The Master Thief is introduced into the series. There is also tension between Christians, Muslims, Copts, and a rather strange sect called The Church of Jerusalem, led by a charismatic Brother Ezekiel.

There are murders, robbers, adventures, and spinning Mummy cases from Ptolemaic and Roman periods. Emerson is a irascible as always, and truly The Father of Curses, but has such a soft spot for his wife and son, the only two people in the world who touch that soft centre of his. The Cat Bastet has travelled to Egypt with them for their dig at Dashure, and a young lion cub has been added to the team.

The unstoppable Amelia, armed with her parasol and à waterproof box of matches proceeds briskly towards the goals of her family, their profession, and tying up all the threads of the mystery.

As usual, Barbara Rosenblatt brilliantly narrates this, and it is all great fun.

Three is a charm for the Amelia Peabody novels
