Description

Germany, 1939. A tumbledown farmhouse, on the outskirts of a close-knit village in the heart of the rolling hills of Bavaria. A once happy family home torn apart by Nazi rule. And one young girl who refuses to give up on what she believes in....

London, 2018: When 94-year-old Imogen receives a letter addressed to her in neat, unfamiliar handwriting, she notices the postmark is stamped from Germany - and it sends shivers down her spine....

Germany, 1939: Thirteen-year-old Magda is devastated by the loss of her best friend, shy and gentle Lotte, cruelly snatched from her and sent to a concentration camp – the Star of David sewn on her faded, brown coat. As the Nazi’s power takes hold, Magda realises she’s not like the other girls in her German village - she hates the fanatical new rules of the Hitler Youth. So Magda secretly joins The White Rose Movement and begins to rebel against the oppressive, frightening world around her.

But when an English bomber pilot crashes in a field near Magda’s home she is faced with an impossible choice: to risk the safety of her family or to save a stranger and make a difference in the devastating war that has claimed the lives of so many. Little does she know, her actions will have the power to change the life of another girl, on the other side of enemy lines, forever....

Inspired by a true story, this is a heart-wrenching, gripping and absolutely unforgettable tale of the strength of human kindness in a time of unimaginable heartbreak. Fans of Orphan Train, The Tattooist of Auschwitz and The Book Thief will be utterly gripped by this beautiful, sweeping, World War Two novel.

The connection between 2 families as the maneuver thru WWII

A wonderful story based on some real life and some conglomerations of real people. It is not lost on me that these two families faced terrible hardships but vowed to always be respectful and show integrity. A great lesson for all time but especially 2020-21.
I know it’s a good book when I talk about the story line with others and encourage them to read the book. Enjoy!

Intriguing Read

I highly recommend this book to any who enjoy WWII, stories. I thoroughly enjoyed all the characters, the narrators who brought them to life. I loved how the characters were connected without knowing the connection and how that was brought full circle towards the end of the book.
I also love that parts of the stories were based on true recollections from the authors families.
Again I highly recommend this read.

Wonderful story!!

Fantastic book. Beautifully told It was a privilege to be able to listen to this. It is peopled with real characters. I felt as if I knew them personally right from the.beginning. There are many books written about that period of our history. Many of them very good. These give a lot of details of the tragedies of that time. This book, somehow is a gentler story, told with, I think, tenderness for the people involved. I loved it.

Romance novel with WW2 as a backdrop.

Enjoyable read about the lives of 2 women in different cities during WW2, & how their lives were connected in some ways.

A historical book worth the listen.

Loved the story. I especially enjoyed hearing both sides. Life in Germany and in Britain during the war. The narrator was easy to understand and reflected the feelings of both women.

Amazing

I wasn't actually sure how I'd feel about this book but it's so well written and its it's amazing to think most of this actually happened. it's more about humanity than the war.

Great period piece

I enjoyed this book so much and it really brought home both sides of the war and how people are caught in the middle! Well written and I enjoyed the reader!

Compelling and interesting history

This story is so compelling! I loved how it shows the German family's perspective. And the girl working for the Wrens was very interesting, as I'd not known much about it before. The only issue I had was the very weird voices that the narrator used for a lot of the characters. Her American was horrible! And the scraggly voice of Joy was particularly irritating and made her sound like an old witch! Terrible. But amazing story overall and I loved how it all intertwined!
