When Chen’s parents are incinerated before his eyes by a blast of ball lightning, he devotes his life to cracking the secret of the mysterious natural phenomenon. His search takes him to stormy mountaintops, an experimental military weapons lab, and an old Soviet science station. The more he learns, the more he comes to realize that ball lightning is just the tip of a new frontier in particle physics. Although Chen’s quest provides a purpose for his life, his reasons for chasing his elusive quarry come into conflict with soldiers and scientists who have motives of their own.

Histoire
After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

Welcome to Ringworld, an intermediate step between Dyson Spheres and planets. The gravitational force created by a rotation on its axis of 770 miles per second means no need for a roof. Walls 1,000 miles high at each rim will let in the sun and prevent much air from escaping. Larry Niven's novel, Ringworld, is the winner of the 1970 Hugo Award for Best Novel, the 1970 Nebula Award for Best Novel, and the 1972 Ditmars, an Australian award for Best International Science Fiction.

Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

These 11 stories, including five Chinese Galaxy Award winners, are a blazingly original ode to planet Earth, its pasts, and its futures. Liu's fiction takes the listener to the edge of the universe and the end of time, to meet stranger fates than we could have ever imagined. With a melancholic and keen understanding of human nature, Liu's stories show humanity's attempts to reason, navigate, and above all, survive in a desolate cosmos.

Very interesting read
I picked this up because I heard a lot of great things about this book. I was surprised with the story and it really engaged me throughout. The science can be a bit much but it really doesn't take anything away from the story.
The voice acting is fine, doing an excellent with all the foreign names.
I will certainly be continuing with this series.

Great sci-fi book, poor narrated
One of my favourite sci-fi books, and I love how deep this particular story went regarding cultural revolution. The problem for me is that it’s hard to focus on the book with this monotone performance.

The science fiction aspect of it blew me away.
it kind of started off slow and the characters didn't stand out that much but just the plot and imagery of the story made up for everything.
I had goosebumps listening to certain parts because the concepts were elegant to imagine.

Mediocre story with lots of plot holes
The trouble with science fiction is that readers will only suspend their disbelief as long as the logic remains consistent.

Refreshing departure from your average American sci fi
Listening to a Chinese story with its focus on deep theory is a challenge but a pleasure too. It takes concentration but is worth it. It’s great the way the author didn’t dumb down the science of nanotechnology. He recognized that readers of his book could keep up and I feel smarter already. I recommend downloading the ebook to see the translators footnotes that give further clarity to the characters and science.
