Description

A fragile peace gives way to conspiracy, betrayal, and rebellion in this sequel to the New York Times best-selling A Little Hatred from epic fantasy master Joe Abercrombie.

Peace is just another kind of battlefield....

Savine dan Glokta, once Adua's most powerful investor, finds her judgement, fortune and reputation in tatters. But she still has all her ambitions, and no scruple will be permitted to stand in her way.

For heroes like Leo dan Brock and Stour Nightfall, only happy with swords drawn, peace is an ordeal to end as soon as possible. But grievances must be nursed, power seized, and allies gathered first, while Rikke must master the power of the Long Eye...before it kills her.

Unrest worms into every layer of society. The Breakers still lurk in the shadows, plotting to free the common man from his shackles, while noblemen bicker for their own advantage. Orso struggles to find a safe path through the maze of knives that is politics, only for his enemies, and his debts, to multiply.

The old ways are swept aside, and the old leaders with them, but those who would seize the reins of power will find no alliance, no friendship, and no peace lasts forever.

Decent

Wasn't as good as the other previous books or the first book in this new series. The story fell a little flat and I didnt get as many character interactions which Joe writes so well and is one of his major strengths. However the ending was great

It Just Keeps Getting Better

This is a series review for the following books:

- The Blade Itself
- Before They Are Hanged
- Last Argument Of Kings
- Best Served Cold
- The Heroes
- Red Country
- Sharp Ends (read chronologically w.r.t. the series)
- A Little Hatred
- The Trouble With Peace
- The Wisdom Of Crowds

I can say with confidence that this is among the best stories I've had the pleasure of experiencing. Author Joe Abercrombie has crafted a politically and morally intricate world where every detail, large or small, matters. Inhabiting this world are truly human characters who you'll laugh, dread, and triumph alongside in their efforts to overcome the Great Leveller's somber inevitability. Narrator Steven Pacey brings these characters to life, giving each a distinct voice and demeanor while consistently nailing the tones and puches thrown by Joe Abercrombie's writing. I hope to see the continued collaboration of this genius duo.

Abercrombie Has Done it Again

Narrator Steven Pacey, as any who has heard his performances will know, has the unique ability to make bad writers sound good. However, when paired with as masterful a writer as Joe Abercrombie, the combination can be as thrilling, engaging, suspensful, and funny as a night shared with the most intimate of lovers. The only problem that I have with Abercrombie's writing is that he is so engulfing a writer that it will take me decades to forget the twists and turns of his literary genius and therefore cannot enjoy his books over and over and over again.

Please Joe, do not stop writing. And, if you ever get anyone other than Mr. Pacey to narrate your books, there will most likely be a "...body found floating by the docks."

Fantastic

One of my favourite authors and an incredible audio book performance. I was left somewhat underwhelmed by the new characters in first of the new series, although it was certainly enjoyable in tone. It turned out that they just needed time to grow into who they'd be. Transitioning away from characters I've loved and across genres simultaneously in the same world, and doing so gracefully is a feat. One of Abercrombie's best and most satisfying.

Joe Abercrombie does not disappoint

I love the characters in these novels. They are so faulted people. The story is fast moving and entertaining. And tragic and graphic. I have listened to all the novels so far and eagerly await the next misadventures of these totally wonderful faulted, heroic and loveable people.

A story for the underdog

Beautifully written and narrated. The story continues to unravel with a perfect ending for all involved.

Slow start, a bit predictable

This isn’t as good as the first book in the series: it lacks the subtle intrigue of previous series, and the main characters all seem to blunder and sleepwalk through much of the book, their flaws dictating the narrative a little too conveniently. In the previous book Abercrombie’s relegation of San Dan Glokta to a supporting role was disappointing but understandable; in this one we are required to believe all the Arch Lector’s cunning and brilliance was left back somewhere in the distant past as well. An ignominious exit for one of the best villains (antiheroes?) in modern literature. The pace of the book picks up in the final third, and the long battle scenes are a highlight, similar to (though not as good as) Abercrombie’s “the heroes”.

Overall I like the world building direction, but this episode feels a bit rushed. I was expecting the middle part of a trilogy, perhaps, and instead got a rushed middle and last act for one story, with a deus ex machina reveal of antagonists foreshadowed in the previous novel to link to the next episode.

That said, I would still recommend the audiobook, the narration throughout is excellent, great characterization.

Joe plays hardball

Book after book , character after incredible character he plays with convention, twists expectations and delivers compelling intense experiences. With books like Red Country and The Hero’s adding to the history of this place, a world .
So yes I liked it .
