Description

Well, it could be better.

Jim and his literal shoulder demon have survived, so far, by the skin of their teeth.

After finding a long-abandoned starter village, Jim has begun the process of rebuilding his town. Unfortunately for our favorite adventurer, the threats he now faces are far more complicated than mere monsters. The poor Noob has to deal with angry townsfolk, trade negotiations, and a talking badger.

With goblins and bandits also sniffing around, will Noobtown - I mean Windfall - survive?

Lots of Fun if You Like Numbers

moreover than many other Lit RPGs, this series emphasizes the calculations of battle in role playing. Much like many others, the main character is flawed but likeable and seems to be quickly getting brokenly over powered.

the narrator does an adequate job for a casual listen, and the relatively short length makes the book easy to get through while doing other tasks.

Good Read

I really enjoyed the humorous interaction between characters. It made me laugh out loud on more than one occasion. Well written author! Also and not to be downplayed was the narration. Without his superb delivery of the lines the story would not have been so enjoyable. Well read narrator!

Funny enough but the story barely ever advances

This is as far as I'm willing to make it in this book series. Barely anything of note happened in the entire book only thing that made me stick around till the end is the jokes and my need to listen to something as I drive to and from work.

A very uneven book

I'm a big fan of LitRPG, but I know some books are great and others terrible. Noobtown is a series that doesn't fit well into either category.

The book is an absurdly humorous take on the LitRPG genre, with our main character bumbling around doing bizarre things that somehow turn out for the best. It's not because he's unintelligent, but because he's ignorant of the way the game world works, as his companion and frenemy demon familiar Shart continues to point out snidely. This means that a lot of the humour feels forced - no matter how smart he is, our main character just can't get a break. His first spell turns out to be a fart spell...and this locks him into specializing in fart magic. He bonds with an animal companion...who turns out to be a bloodthirsty badger. He goes on a quest through the woods...only to discover it is full of monsters and he should have gone a different route that everyone but him apparently knew about. It just feels like the humour is embarrassing - and often juvenile, with jokes about sex, masturbation and farting.

But on the other hand, the main character is also likeable - something not always true, and something important to me - and tries to be a good person. He also thinks about his former life, his children, and his wife from time to time. And he gets to be a bona fide hero, with some game-breaking advantages that make him a growing power in the world. And to top it off, there's the sense that not only are things happening as the story progresses, but that there is an actual overarching plot in the world being developed.

As I listened to the book, I went back and forth between wondering if I should give up on the series. Every time I had made up my mind in one direction, I came across a scene that made me question it again. It's not as if I didn't know what I was getting into - the absurd and juvenile humour is right there in the first book, as is the soul-searching and the sense of accomplishment. I guess I was hoping for the writing to even out more, and it didn't.

The narration continues to be excellent, with realistic and distinctive character voices and a good pace. The LitRPG elements were sometimes a bit lengthy, but unlike most LitRPG books I could complain about, it wasn't from listing character stats - instead, it came from discussions of how the rules work in the game world. The rules are indeed interesting, but at times they detracted from the story rather than adding to it.

I'm going to leave this series behind for a while and give myself time to miss it before I decide whether or not to continue reading book 3.
