Deep down, most people think that happiness comes from having or doing something. Here, in Alan Watts’s groundbreaking third book (originally published in 1940), he offers a more challenging thesis: authentic happiness comes from embracing life as a whole in all its contradictions and paradoxes, an attitude that Watts calls the “way of acceptance.” Drawing on Eastern philosophy, Western mysticism, and analytic psychology, Watts demonstrates that happiness comes from accepting both the outer world around us and the inner world inside us,

At the root of human conflict is our fundamental misunderstanding of who we are. The illusion that we are isolated beings, unconnected to the rest of the universe, has led us to view the “outside” world with hostility, and has fueled our misuse of technology and our violent and hostile subjugation of the natural world. To help us understand that the self is in fact the root and ground of the universe, Watts has crafted a revelatory primer on what it means to be human—and a mind-opening manual of initiation into the central mystery of existence.

Space is considered to be nothingness by many. But after all it is the background in which we see everything. It is against space and within the dimension of time that we experience everything we experience. Space and time are the two basic dimensions of our world but are uncommonly illusive. We can say they are our way of thinking of the universe as being a system of patterns. And our awe at the vastness of space may be man's astonishment at himself.

"What would it be like to see all as one?" Alan Watts asks. "We hear about attaining great states of consciousness. But the only way to have a real transformation is to stop thinking about it - and simply experience it." From the 1950s to the 1970s, this seminal teacher sparked the West's love for Eastern wisdom. Now, in these rare recorded gems, he inspires a new generation of inner explorers seeking deeper insights into meditation - its myriad forms, how they work, and what happens when we practice them.

Alan Watts discusses the word tathata, which is translated from the Sanskrit as "suchness" or "thusness." The term is used in Mahayana Buddhism to suggest how things look to a Buddha, to one who has experienced enlightenment or liberation and is, therefore, called a Tathagata - one who comes (and goes) thus. Watts shares the sense of this nonsense in Buddhist philosophy, and its practical demonstration in Zen.

How can we live our lives when everything seems to fall apart—when we are continually overcome by fear, anxiety, and pain? The answer, Pema Chödrön suggests, might be just the opposite of what you expect. Here, in her most beloved and acclaimed work, Pema shows that moving toward painful situations and becoming intimate with them can open up our hearts in ways we never before imagined. Drawing from traditional Buddhist wisdom, she offers life-changing tools for transforming suffering and negative patterns into habitual ease and boundless joy.

Alan Watts discusses the Indian philosophy of the world as maya - under its multiple meanings as illusion, art, magic, creative power, measure, etc. Various techniques in the arts are used to illustrate the delicate and vibrational character of the material world, and to suggest a new approach to the old philosophy that the universe is "mind" only.

This mesmerizing, surreal account of the bizarre adventures of Terence McKenna, his brother Dennis, and a small band of their friends, is a wild ride of exotic experience and scientific inquiry. Exploring the Amazon Basin in search of mythical shamanic hallucinogens, they encounter a host of unusual characters - including a mushroom, a flying saucer, pirate Mantids from outer space, an appearance by James and Nora Joyce in the guise of poultry, and translinguistic matter - and discover the missing link in the development of human consciousness and language.

Alan Watts discusses the fundamental attitudes that run through all religions or "ways of liberation," as the Far Eastern disciplines might better be described. Histoire
Drawn from hundreds of hours of rare archival recordings from the personal collection of his son, Mark Watts, this program presents the essential message of Alan Watts. Here is Alan Watts, recorded live in seminars conducted in America and Japan, personally explaining how the Eastern view of man and his place in the world can be made meaningful to the contemporary Westerner.
Auteur(s): Alan W. Watts
Description
Alan W. Watts' "message for an age of anxiety" is as powerful today as it was when this modern classic was first published. We spend too much time trying to anticipate and plan for the future, too much time lamenting the past. We often miss the pleasures of the moment in our anxious efforts to ensure the next moment is as enjoyable.
Drawing from Eastern philosophy and religion, Watts argues that it is only by acknowledging what we do not and cannot know that we can find something truly worth knowing. In order to lead a fulfilling life, one must embrace the present - live fully in the now.
Elegantly reasoned and lucidly written, this philosophical achievement contains all the wisdom and spirit that distinguished Watts' long career and resonates with us still.

Interesting point of view
I read a lot of philosophy and as book of philosophy this was dreadful. It's disjointed, highly repetitive -- as if repetition somehow makes the point more correct -- rambling at times, inconsistent and unverified/unsupported throughout. It cannot be read as philosophy by even the least discerning reader.
I still gave it three stars, however because he does have a "point of view" that I found interesting enough that it left me, even days later, considering and reconsidering how we perceive and interact with the world around us.

Should be required reading!
I grew up a preacher's kid, became a Vascular Surgeon, and today I am also as an Addiction Medicine physician. This concise book encompasses the things I was really seeking on this journey but did not realize I was seeking. Religion vs Science, Mind vs Body, Connection vs Separation, Self vs self. All of these and more are brilliantly stated and reconciled, not in a way to provide answers, but to bring wonder. These puzzle pieces are arranged enough to bring form and shape to big questions. I gave the performance a 4 only because I have heard tapes spoken by Alan Watts himself, and no one compares.

Very very deep...
This was my first book by Alan Watts and I loved it so much. He explains insecurity in a whole new level of understanding, and if you think you are capable to understand, go ahead and dive.
I will definetly reread this book. This book is in a Top 10 book, that I read for the whole time, and the best book on insecurity. I Highly recommend it.
PS: I write this addition afterward reading this book after 2 weeks, and I can say, that this book have something really deep inside. I can definetly say, that it changed a lot of aspects of my life, on different levels of conciousness. I never before done rewieing afterward, but this book trully and absolutly worth it.

Can't handle Sean Runnette's voice and narrating
This book is incredible, I will have to read it.
The way it is ready by this guy Sean Runnette is So bad! I couldn't even make it past the first few minutes.
Terrible lispy, juicy S's. Pauses in all the wrong places, emphasis on the wrong words and unecessary commentary that takes you off track. Get someone who sounds Like Alan to narrate this book.

Relief
I was raised as a Christian, my parents, both mother and father are pasters. Wisdom is the structure for successful religions, in Christianity there is much to be found, yet I can't deny that I have heard life changing wisdom outside of my own beliefs. I am at the age now where I have began to question and keep an open mind, a game of, follow the wisdom. Anxiety disorder is something I continue to fight, win and lose on a daily basis, I see as well as who I am suppose to be in my religion contributes to that anxiousness I feel.
I would be a fool and have no since of wisdom in me if I where to deny this book, it speaks to me on a level I can't deny.

Amazing Book, Amazing Author.
One of the greatest reads of my life, I dont doubt for a second that I will listen to this book countless times over, my only complaint is that the narrator seems poorly chosen, such a monotonous and somehow miserly sounding voice does no justice to the lively firey flare and humor of Alan Watts' speeches, stories, analogies, and anecdotes. 10/10 book, worth re-narrating. Sorry Sean-Runnette I'm sure you're a cool guy.
