Is it even possible to be funnier?!

I mean, talk about laugh out loud. I had to back up the play every bit just to hear what followed my belt of laughter. The writing, the narrating, both are so complimentary to each other it is hard to imagine that any duo could be more perfectly paired. Bravo! So eager to hear where Willa’s clumsiness takes her and what it gets her into. It’s awesome! So much fun!

Hilarious 5 stars

Willa is a dweller who has the honor to get chosen to go serve the Sols training to become gods. The only problem is her clumsiness is sure to either get her thrown out or killed. Even worse, she gets assigned to the dormitories of the 5 Abcurse brothers, the strongest and most powerful students in the academy, but the worse Sols to be around.

Plot-wise, this book is more about getting to know Willa, the five brothers, and building the relationship between them. There is no big endgame, and I am not sure at all where this series is going yet, but it was silly, mindless fun, and I loved every minute of it!

The world-building is well done and is easy enough to understand, except maybe the whole time system that works differently. They have clicks instead of minutes, sun-cycles, moon-cycles and life-cycles, but honestly, even if I was confused at times because I’m not used to this system, it did not prevent me from understanding or enjoying the story at all.

Basically, dwellers are at the bottom of the hierarchy, they live in their poor villages, and hope to someday get chosen to serve the Sols because that’s the best they can hope for. The Sols are all mighty and often have magical powers, and they in turn go to the academy in the hopes of being noticed by the gods, so they can become gods when they die.

At first, I was not sure if I liked Willa because she seems so silly at times and she is so clumsy it's almost a parody (Bella Swan style, but 5x worse). She can't move more than a few steps without tripping, hitting somebody, falling down a flight of stairs, accidentally setting something on fire, or ending up losing some of her clothes. She is a danger to herself, but also to everyone around her and it’s a miracle that she made it this far in life, I mean, the girl accidentally stabbed someone (apparently it was not the first time it happened) because she tripped with a knife and she started many fires by accident...

If you really want to enjoy this book, do not take it too seriously and just enjoy the humor and funny situations. Willa is a walking catastrophe, and she has no filter, but the over-the-top situations she ends up in are what make this book great, especially if you are looking for something light and funny. Willa is sassy and so funny in her “I don’t give a shit because my clumsiness will kill me anyway” way, it kinda made her fearless honestly, which I liked. She is determined to continue pushing forward, even when things seem to be doomed and she had no hopes of winning or getting away, she just keeps on fighting and somehow makes it work.

I like that Willa is a quick thinker and finds ways to get out of the tricky situations she inevitably ends up in. She just rolls with it and has accepted the fact that her life is chaos, and the best she can do is pretend that she’s somewhat in control of it. That's actually how she manages to develop a relationship with the brothers in the first place. She just pretends that everything is fine even when she almost dies a few times, and her lack of survival instincts made it so that she’s an interesting dweller who does not conform instead of being like all the others, and that’s what attracted the attention of the Abcurses. She is a walking disaster and she owns it, she even tries to warn others beforehand that something will inevitably happen if she's involved.

The five brothers are great, I really like them. They are arrogant and have no respect for authority, but they are also funny, and very loyal. They stick together no matter what, and once Willa becomes part of their group, she is there to stay. There are five of them, and this is a relatively short book, so we don’t know much about them yet, but I loved the little we saw.

could have been better

Basic characters, Willa is clumsy, Emmy is a rule following know it all, and I don't think I know anything about the brothers beyond what they look like and what their gift is. Plot line is simplistic, it's from the point of view of an 18 year old and it could have been written by one. Most of the story is mindless blathering inside Willa's head. So much more could have been done with the story, it's disappointing. Not sure that I will continue the series.

Couldn't Finish

Couldn't even get through the book. Really enjoyed the premise of the story but it was just so boring I couldn't do it. The main character has all these clumsy accidents that truly just seem as though whenever given the chance, the author threw one in. I also had a very hard time listening to the narrator.

Not bad

Unfortunately I didn’t find this quite as funny as other readers. It just wasn’t my kind of humour. The beginning of the book reminded me of The Hunger Games and I enjoyed that part. But the second half of the book dragged and I was easily distracted. It’s not terrible but just not for me.

Shockingly hilarious and entertaining

The other reviewers aren’t pulling a prank, this book was very very entertaining and full of laugh out loud moments. The style of writing is kind of satirical and reminds me of parody writing, so if you like that kind of humour I recommend it. It’s not parodying anything specific, just kind of laughing at the fantasy genre, and in particular the fantasy-romance genre. I don’t really read romance novels, I’m not really into sappy stuff, but I absolutely loved this book because it’s so funny, the world building is unique and interesting, the characters are interesting and bizarre, and again the main character is a riot! To top it off, the narrator for this book is fantastic, she’s got brilliant range in voices and breathed more life and comedy into this story. Narrators make or break audiobooks and she elevated this story in my opinion. Everything about this book from the cover, to the title made me think no way, but it was on sale and the reviews were shocking because they kept going on about how funny this book is and it really is. I hope the rest in the series are just as funny, I scooped them all up while they were on sale. I also have to say this is a perfect bed time book because the story isn’t overly emotional and the narrator is so charming and optimistic so you’ll fall asleep happy and laughing. I’ll definitely be listening to this over and over again! One of the best audible purchases I have made!

On the edge of my seat: mysterious, exciting, fun and hilarious story! 🤩

I loved this book, the characters and the edge of my seat feeling waiting for the mysteries to be revealed! I love Willa and the Abcurse brothers, they are so fun, hilarious, sexy and intense. 🔥 Their chemistry is HOT! Definitely worth a credit. Great narration for the females, so so narration for male characters but still worth a listen. I am now starting book 2 of the series! 🤩

So funny

Just like some of the other reviews have mentioned, this book was hilarious! There was more than one time when I laughed out loud. The main character is just the right mixture of clumsy, dumb yet smart, and brave. The crap that happens to her is hilarious. Though I don't know if she is brave because she is dumb. I don't normally like dumb main characters but I found this character very charming. I kept wanting to come back just to hear what she would say next.
I would definitely recommend this book! I am excited for the next one! Which I'm going to just into right after I click submit.

lowbrow entertainment

If you want sophisticated literature this is NOT the book for you.
If you want highbrow wordsmithing this is NOT the book for you.
It is cringy on a level that rival's My Immortal, HOWEVER it is light, funny and entertaining and a great little read.
